Default Outlook Express 5.0 to 6.0 (can you believe this)

Forwarded via crosspost to WinME General and OE6 newsgroups for various
reasons. eg

5. After learning that IE 6 is more secure than IE 5.5, and after much
searching, I located a free downloadable copy of IE 6 and OE at
http://www.windowsdownloads.com/. I downloaded a setup.exe file that, when
executed downloaded and installed IE 6 and OE 5.5.

Oh, my! IE6 (SP1) comes with OE6 (SP1), not OE5.5. Why didn't you just
download it all from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...downloads.mspx or
via Windows Update?

OE Help about: What version is displayed here (e.g., 5.50.1234.5678)?

OE Help About Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL are
displayed here?

(This download also downloaded and installed [no choice] Advanced
Searchbar that then appeared at the top of my IE window. I scanned the
downloaded setup.exe using Norton Antivirus with no hits. I also scanned
my computer after the IE 6 download and it came up clean. After the
install, I located and removed the Advanced Searchbar using Add/Remove
Programs.)

You might have gotten much more than you bargained for, especially after
seeing this page:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/win...s.com?aff_id=0 !! Chances
are that other hijackware/spyware persists on the machine. Understand that
Home/Small Office editions of Norton AntiVirus (NAV) do not detect such

Your original problem was most likely caused by the install of KB911567.
Uninstalling it probably would've fixed it, or see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917288/ (ignore the title).

Fixed Missing WAB DLL !!!

Our system: Windows ME, Outlook 2000, Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook
Express 6. (IE 5.5 and OE 5.5 were on our system when we bought it and we
upgraded to IE 6 and OE 6.) After using Outlook 2000 for more than five
years, a few days ago we received an error message that our Windows
Address Book could not be accessed and that the WAB DLL file was missing.
We were no longer able to send emails. With the much-appreciated help of
Microsoft Discussion Groups participants Jim Pickering, PA Bear, Michael
Santovec, Russ Valentine, Hal Hostetler, Milly Staples and JoAnne Paules
and after 3 ½ days of my own research and work, the problem has been
resolved. Below is the final process I used. I hope it will help someone
else.
1. Research revealed that Outlook 2000 requires Outlook Express to run.
Our Outlook Express 6 was (at that point) corrupt and would not launch.
That appeared to be our problem. IE 6 and OE 6 are, however, no longer
available on the MS website and cannot be purchased.
2. I used Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and first uninstalled OE 6. I
then uninstalled IE 6 the same way. A window appeared saying that the
original IE 5.5 version would be reloaded. It was.
3. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=278909 OLEXP: How to Manually
Uninstall and Reinstall Outlook Express on Windows Millennium. This
article states that a number of steps must be followed to completely
remove OE before the original version (5.5) is reloaded. Once I had
carefully completed all the removal steps it told me to go to Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab, to check the box next to
Outlook Express and then click Apply. This reinstalled OE 5.5.
4. With IE 6 and OE 6 removed and IE 5.5 and OE 5.5 reinstalled, I could
again use my Outlook 2000 to send mail.
I was concerned that
there might be a conflict since the versions of IE 6 and OE 5.5 did not
match. So far, I have not had a problem and my Outlook 2000 runs fine.
(This download also downloaded and installed [no choice] â?oAdvanced
Searchbarâ?? that then appeared at the top of my IE window. I scanned the
downloaded setup.exe using Norton Antivirus with no hits. I also scanned
my computer after the IE 6 download and it came up clean. After the
install, I located and removed the Advanced Searchbar using Add/Remove
Programs.)
6. I then downloaded all available updates for IE 6 and OE 5.5.

Thanks for the info. The only problem is that in Step 3 it says:

Part 3: Uninstall Outlook Express from Windows Me
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows Setup
tab.
3. Under Components, scroll down until you see Outlook Express listed.
Click to clear the Outlook Express check box.
4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Outlook Express is not listed in my Windows Setup Tab window. I cannot
unclick the box to uninstall it because it is not listed. Now what?

I have learned that the OE version I have (that is corrupt) is OE 6. I
also have IE 6. Perhaps I'll try to download IE 6 and OE 6.

Thanks for your reply. I believe I may have seen the MS IE6 download page you
referenced but I thought it was an upate for IE6 to get SP1 not IE6 including
SP1. I'm not a full-time computer guy and was doing the best I knew how.
Thanks for the info on the siteadvisor website. I'm not familiar with the
site and therefore did not check it. You are probably correct in that I have
downloaded more than I wanted. I have just dumped all my Temporary Internet
Files and Cookies and I ran Ad-Ware to find the spyware, etc. Will Ad-Ware
find it all? It found, and I deleted, 1 RegKey and 7 RegValue "Critical
Objects." They were Alexa data miners with a TAC of 5. Do you recommend that
I uninstall the garbage I downloaded (even though everything appears to be
working) and reinstall from the MS IE6 site you referenced? If I went back to
my original 5.5 versions of both would Windows Update upgrade both to 6?

I think it'd be best to leave you in the hands of the experts in WinME

I see that you've managed to continue the crossposting to the other

5. After learning that IE 6 is more secure than IE 5.5, and after
much searching, I located a free downloadable copy of IE 6 and OE at
http://www.windowsdownloads.com/. I downloaded a setup.exe file
that, when executed downloaded and installed IE 6 and OE 5.5. I was
concerned that there might be a conflict since the versions of IE 6
and OE 5.5 did not match. So far, I have not had a problem and my
Outlook 2000 runs fine. (This download also downloaded and installed
[no choice] â?oAdvanced Searchbarâ? that then appeared at the
top of my IE window. I scanned the downloaded setup.exe using Norton
Antivirus with no hits. I also scanned my computer after the IE 6
download and it came up clean. After the install, I located and
removed the Advanced Searchbar using Add/Remove Programs.)
6. I then downloaded all available updates for IE 6 and OE 5.5.

Thanks for the info. The only problem is that in Step 3 it says:

Part 3: Uninstall Outlook Express from Windows Me
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows
Setup tab.
3. Under Components, scroll down until you see Outlook Express
listed. Click to clear the Outlook Express check box.
4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Outlook Express is not listed in my Windows Setup Tab window. I
cannot unclick the box to uninstall it because it is not listed.
Now what?

I have learned that the OE version I have (that is corrupt) is OE
6. I also have IE 6. Perhaps I'll try to download IE 6 and OE 6.

Why do you need OE 5? If you have some data files from OE5,

I've played with this rogue installer now - and while it's ugly, I've not

malware, and providing you did nothing except install it along with IE6, and
then Uninstall the Search bar, then I think there's not too much to worry

You can go back to the MS site (please! g) and download the correct stub,

Kent
AFAIK, downloading this installer and using it in the correct way (as
indicated on the site) will upgrade your current installation fully - but
you will still need to go back to Windows Updates afterwards to get the
essential update - there should be no need to remove the existing
installation prior to using this one.
The download from 'wsiedown' is the FULL IE6SP1 download - which includes
IE6 - and needs no further input. - it downloads the stub from the MS site
(which is the ONLY place to get it from!), and uses that as the installer
for the rest of the process.

1. Research revealed that Outlook 2000 requires Outlook Express to run.
Our Outlook Express 6 was (at that point) corrupt and would not launch.
That appeared to be our problem. IE 6 and OE 6 are, however, no longer

then uninstalled IE 6 the same way.
5. After learning that IE 6 is more secure than IE 5.5, and after much
searching, I located a free downloadable copy of IE 6 and OE at
http://www.windowsdownloads.com/. I downloaded a setup.exe file that,
when
executed downloaded and installed IE 6 and OE 5.5.

I'm running Windows ME and Outlook 2000. Suddenly I can no longer
access my
address book in Outlook. I get a missing wab dll message which is
really a
missing wab32.dll. I now understand that Outlook 2000 requires OE
to
run. I
have never used OE, it is on my computer but it won't launch. It
must be
corrupt. I'm trying to reinstall OE (I'm guessing 5) so my Outlook
2000 will
function again. I'm assuming my system came with IE5/OE5 but I'm
not
certain.

If you upgraded from IE5/OE5 to IE6/OE6, uninstalling IE6/OE6

Otherwise you'd have to install IE5 which includes OE5. And
that's going to be a mess. It's not even an option for newer
versions of Windows which came with IE6.

Why do you need OE 5? If you have some data files from OE5, OE6
can read them

Default Outlook Express 5.0 to 6.0 (can you believe this)

Noel,
What is "AFAIK"? I don't yet fully speak the language you guys do.
I have the funky IE6 SP1 and OE 5.5 running now. Are you saying NOT to
remove my IE 6 SP1 and OE 5.5 prior to downloading and installing the proper
IE 6 SP1 from MS using the link you provided? I plan to do all this tomorrow
morning (Saturday). I would never have gone to windowsdownloads.com if I had
been able to find what I needed on the MS site. Actually, I think I did find
the download but thought it was only an upgrade to SP1 and not the full
install. Thanks again for staying with me on this.

Again, thanks for your help. I understand that the link provided
(http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html) is for IE6 SP1 FULL
SETUP/complete installer...not just an upgrade to add SP1. Does this
download
include OE6? Noel, what do you mean by "download the correct stub...."

I want to avoid reformatting the hard drive and reloading ME. Our system
is
running now and we plan to replace it with a 64 bit system when the MS
Vista
OS comes out. We would rather "limp along" until then rather than to
reformat
the HD and reload ME.

I will be out of town until Friday evening and won't be able to work on
this
further until Saturday. At that time, I will probably uninstall the IE6
using
Add/Remove Programs and then download and install IE6 SP1/OE6 using the
links
you have provided. (I've also donloaded the McAfee SitaAdvisor plug-in so
I
can hopefully avoid furure downloads from rogue sites.) If any of what
I've
said is wrong or ill-advised, please let me know. I'll check back on
Saturday. Thank you both very much.

I've played with this rogue installer now - and while it's ugly, I've
not
actually found anything in the default install that could class it as
malware, and providing you did nothing except install it along with
IE6, and
then Uninstall the Search bar, then I think there's not too much to
worry
about.
The Alexa objects you found are probably unrelated - there is an Alexa
object built into IE6 at the start, and one click on the 'related'
button
activates it.
You can go back to the MS site (please! g) and download the correct
stub,
and redownload the complete installer for IE6SP1/OE6 - which will
ensure
that you get all the bits you need (the one you downloaded seems to be
missing a few - presumably to make space for the ones you got instead!)
..
The instructions for doing this are he-

Once you've got it installed, you'll need to go back to Windows
Updates, and
get all the critical updates for it - and a few of the recommended ones
as
well (they help OE work properly).

Kent, I don't know where to start to unravel all of this, short of
backing
up your personal data, /formatting/ and reinstalling WinME.

I think it'd be best to leave you in the hands of the experts in
WinME
General newsgroup as you'll get the best help there.

I see that you've managed to continue the crossposting to the other
newsgroups. Good! Should the WinME guys choose to eliminate the
crossposting to Win98.Internet.OE and OE6 newsgroups, we certainly
wouldn't mind. If you lose your way to WinME general, you can

Thanks for your reply. I believe I may have seen the MS IE6 download

IE6

best I
knew how. Thanks for the info on the siteadvisor website. I'm not
familiar with the site and therefore did not check it. You are
probably
correct in that I have downloaded more than I wanted. I have just
dumped
all my Temporary Internet Files and Cookies and I ran Ad-Ware to
find the
spyware, etc. Will Ad-Ware find it all? It found, and I deleted, 1
RegKey
and 7 RegValue "Critical Objects." They were Alexa data miners with
a TAC
of 5. Do you recommend that I uninstall the garbage I downloaded
(even
though everything appears to be working) and reinstall from the MS
IE6
site you referenced? If I went back to my original 5.5 versions of
both
would Windows Update upgrade both to 6?

You might have gotten much more than you bargained for, especially
after
seeing this page:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/win...s.com?aff_id=0 !!
Chances are that other hijackware/spyware persists on the machine.
Understand that Home/Small Office editions of Norton AntiVirus
(NAV) do
not detect such things.

Your original problem was most likely caused by the install of
KB911567.
Uninstalling it probably would've fixed it, or see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917288/ (ignore the title).
