can not read some attachments.

When I get email attachments that have the blue e icon or
attachments that the icon looks like a sheet of paper with
writing on it, I can not read it. any suggestions? I
have a compaq computer with windows 98. I can read
attachments that have the windows icon, but nothing else
in text form. I can read pictures with paint brush icon
and the gif icons, but the internet exporer (blue e icon)
and the art icns, I can not read.

What email program?
What are the extensions on the files? (.jpg, .bmp, .art etc.)
(Forget the icons, they mean very little)
