Data CD Turns into Audio CD
When I'm finished burning a Data CD and try to view its content in
Windows Explorer, the CD turns into an Audio CD and Windows Media Player pops up attempting to read it and play from it. A similar problem has happened when I insert a CD-RW in my drive - WMP pops up and tries to play from the CD-RW. The CD-RW then turns into an Audio CD. None of my CDs contain audio in them and I record them using Mode 1 for Data CD. How do I stop Windows Media player from popping up and turning my CDs into unreadable Audio CDs? Please help, I've lost a lot of data. Using WMP 9 and NTI CD Maker 2000 for Data CD's and NTI FileCD for packet writing. Thanks in advance. You've been of help before andI hope you can again. Meanwhile, I'll continue searching for a solution in Google. John |

I would try uninstalling the Windows Media Player to find
out what happens when you insert the disk without it. If that doesn't tell you anything, try running the relevant Repair features of TweakUI, such as repair system files and repair file associations. First, I would *not* uninstall WMP as Eric suggests....that is simply 'killing the
messenger'. Assuming that the drive used to read burned CDs correctly, get an inexpensive CD-drive cleaning disc...the type sold for cleaning audio CD players...and clean the laser lens with it. Just follow the instructions included with the cleaning CD. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "JohnnieD" wrote in message ... Data CD Turns into Audio CD
Not trying to go against glee. But, I have a much happier
PC without WMP9. But there is a recent patch at MS update site for WMP9. I think it was released June25 of this year. I do not have WMP9 on my system due to the fact it was intruding into everything. CD burning,IE and game CDs. And no matter how many times I went into options to dissable it. It would find some way to interfere again. So I uninstalled WMP9 to a previous, more passive, version. If you take away the *Roxio* burn feature, the Screen graphics and the tons of registration garbage out of WMP9 you will have version 7. If your CD Burning program has a scan disk feature? Insert the Cds,in question,in to the Burn drive and run the programs scan. It should see the problem and fix it. You may have to scan them more then once to get this to work. -----Original Message----- When I'm finished burning a Data CD and try to view its content in Windows Explorer, the CD turns into an Audio CD and Windows Media Player pops up attempting to read it and play from it. Thanks so very much for responding, Eric, glee and ppoatt.
First of all I'll have to correct myself regarding the version of WMP; it's NOT version 9, it's version 7.01. Sorry about that. I thought I had it installed, but it was the DirectX 9.0 that was installed. I do not wish to uninstall WMP at this point until I have exhausted all other options - namely, clean the laser lens, as suggested by Glee; using better quality discs (the current discs are my first batch of 100 that I purchased really cheap); and, trying the twea(s) below. Eric, installed TewakUI and found the following under the Paranoia tab: Paranoia-Play Audio/Data CDs automatically. I have them both enabled with a checkmark. I wonder if unchecking them will do the trick. Also, I found the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article (120625): http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;126025 "How to Disable the Feature That Allows CD-ROMs and Audio CDs to Run Automatically." I haven't read the whole article yet, just scanned it. Is this the same tweak as the one on the Paranoia tab? Will disable "Auto insert notification" (My Computer-CDROM-Properties-Settings) and let you all know what happens. I'm afraid, though, I may not find out if the above will fix the problem as it occurred only occasionally. Thanks very much to the three of you for your responses. Much appreciated. The items on the Paranoia tab of TweakUI will not affect the problem you
describe....they only toggle the 'Autorun' feature for CD drives (not to be confused with 'Autoinsert Notification'). Likewise, turning off Autoinsert Notification should also have no bearing, though you certainly can try it to satisfy your curiosity. You must reboot after toggling it. The most likely reasons are either a dirty lens, or incompatible media (discs). -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "JohnnieD" wrote in message ... Data CD Turns into Audio CD
Glen,
I have had data disc that data was loaded on at differant times turn to music files. Due to a bad closing of the last download before it happened. And the culprit causing it was the AV program doing it's scans on the data transfer to the burner. I just make a point if it is data transfer from HD to CD that the AV program is shut down. I would not shut the AV down if transfering from the net. Which come to think of it...I don't anyway. I always download stuff to my back partition, first, and then download or save it from there. -----Original Message----- The items on the Paranoia tab of TweakUI will not affect the problem you describe....they only toggle the 'Autorun' feature for CD drives (not to be confused with 'Autoinsert Notification'). Yes, good point....especially on somewhat older or slower systems, it is a good idea
to close any open apps before burning, and an AV program is surely one that could interfere with data transfer. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "ppoatt" wrote in message ...
