Default How to view a file .avi with Irfanview that asks for H264 on Win98

I just ran avidemux on the WinXP. Worked PERFECTLY for
these security cam videos and easily step either direction,

want and the images off my cameras are large enough so will
work/function.

Well if you have the still images, simply open them in
IrfanView and use "ImageResize/Resample..." from the menu. It
may well do a better job at resizing the images than most
video players would anyway.

I tried to view an .avi from a realtor that I got years ago
when we were house hunting. The image pops into the screen,
but when you hit play, the program announces it's creating
a 'rash' file and quits! Can't view these avi videos go
figure, I used to watch them on the Win98 and now these old
avi's won't view on the avidemux on the WinXP.

I haven't much experience with avidemux. However I do make
much use of VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) which runs
on Windows 98. I've used it before to grab frames from video
using the "Copy Source Frame to Clipboard" option in the
"Video" menu and it worked quite well.

You will need a codec for it to work though. Xvid
(http://www.xvid.org/) is a popular Freeware one, and
supposably supports 98. With that installed, the Windows Media
Player interface in IrfanView should work too, as well as
Media Player Classic.

Ffdshow Tryouts (http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/) has
the same decoders in it that VLC uses, but they are able to be
used as codecs (hence work in IrfanView, MPC, VirtualDub
etc.). I'm prety sure I've tried and failed to install it on
98 though. Perhaps KernelEx would help...
