Default Incomplete Defragmentation

I have been trying to defrag my 4 GB hard drive. My problem is it won't
complete the defrag cycle. It will get to 10% and then recycle back to the
beginning and start over again. I have left it running over night for two
days now and it never gets beyond 10%. It appears to be working but when it
recycles back to the beginning there is free space showing at the beginning
of the drive with black clusters mixed in with the blue clusters. I have
closed the screen saver, all programs and logged of the Internet. I have
checked it for virus and spyware. What else can I do to solve the problem?

Reboot into Safe Mode (usually by holding down Ctl
while rebooting) and then Defrag.

The Defrag utility restarts whenever anything new is
written to the drive, so a "clean boot" is desirable
before using it.

Your response was spot on. However this was the first time in the five year
that I have owned this computor that I have had to defrag in the safe mode.
Don't know why, but at least I am able to defrag the unit. I do thank you
for your help in leading me out of my frustration.

Perhaps a new program is monitoring something, such as the cpu temp, updates,
etc.
Also you should run scandisk just before defragging.
