Default SHIMGVW.DLL display JPEG problem

Hello

I am suddenly unable to view any pictures that I have on
my system (e.g JPEG file). I get the following error in a
box headed RUNDLL -

"Error loading c:\windows\system\shimgvw.dll
One of the library files needed to run this application
cannot be found"

I have tried system restore but it just seems to hang. I
have looked up the shimgvw.dll in the knowledge base but
am none the wiser. It tells me to do stuff at a command
prompt but I don't know what a command prompt is either.
Apologies for my ignorance but this is the first problem I
have had in 3 years of having a computer so have been
pretty lucky.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

Rob,

I'm having my own problems trying to restore the default
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

From web searches, I found several approaches to my
problem, which may help you as well.

Running the command processor is done by StartRun, then
entering cmd in the box, and pressing the enter key. You
will get a new (black background) view with a C:\ prompt,
awaiting your commands (see below, e.g. regsrvr32).

I began by unregistering shimgvw.dll, then
registering it newly (regsvr32 shimgvw.dll), which
succeeded. Then I used Windows explorer to set the file
association for all JPEG-type files (open = "rundll32.exe
c:\winnt\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1").
Then when I double-clicked on a .jpg file, I got this
error: "Error in c:\winnt\system32\shimgvw.dll Missing
entry:ImageView_Fullscreen"

My shimgvw.dll is 52,496 bytes, version 5.00.2134.1, dated
05/08/2001.
