Default BSOD during startup - VNETBIOS.BXD

Win 98SE, Nav 2003, Spybot S&D, Zone alarm free (not updating anymore as
it doesn't for Win98SE)
Networked via ethernet cable to BT Voyager router and then wirelessly to
an XP Home machine downstairs.

I'm getting a consistently repeatable BSOD during the windows startup -
AFTER the windows network logon screen and during the "startup" process
as windows or the startup apps load.
Windows
Fatal Exception error 0028:C006FCFB in VXD VNETBIOS(01) + 000005EB
Current application will be terminated etc etc

Clicking the "any key" a few times produces four or five consecutive
BSOD's then the startup continues okay - and my network is up and
functioning.

bootlog.txt shows the following failures and delays
(I have the full bootlog if it will be helpful)
failures
10:12:31 0.00 LoadFailed = ndis2sup.vxd
10:12:33 0.00 DEVICEINITFAILED = MTRR

I'm about to clear all the startup items in Run- msconfig and then
re-add them one by one to trouble shoot whether one of these programs is
causing the conflict.

Any suggestions most welcome.

You missed the Fatal Exception Code, a 2 character value (0E, 0D, 06
are common values) that appears between the "Fatal Exception" and the
error address (0028:C006FCFB) in your case.

This is important information as it helps to delineate the underlying
cause of the error.

Are you using Novell netware on your network? There is a well known
issue with Novell login scripts that produces this error.

I see from your "delays" information that your computer is infested by
a Norton product. That is very often a source of seemingly unrelated
problems, especially if you are using a newer version on older
hardware.

SIS6326M is a sound card driver so you might want to update these
drivers as well.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Good luck

Sorry about that.
Since posting I have discovered that removing a recently installed
messaging program called Winsent.exe from my startup routine made this
go away. I've replaced it with Winpopup, and left the winsent on the XP
machine. They seem to be able to talk to each other.

The Norton is NAV 2003 and removing it would be harder than leaving it :-)
The sound card seems to work fine.

Thanks for the input.

For example, you can use Bopup Messenger on both Windows XP/9x
machines. It offers more functions and features in comparison with the
stardard software. http://www.blabsoft.com/products/messenger/
