Divide Overflow
I am reinstalling Windows 98 on a small hard drive (8g) and everytime I try
it gets to "Windows 98 is now installing its driver database" and everything freezes up and at the top left of the screen it says"Your program caused a divide overflow error. If the problem persists contact your program vendor". Thats as far as it will go. H E L P !!!!! |

Are you trying to install over the top of the existing system or is the hard
drive blank? If the drive is blank, I would suspect a hardware problem, likely ram or CPU. If you are installing over the top, then I would format the drive (providing there are no files that you need) and install the system clean. What lead you to reinstall the system--were you having problems and if so, what were they? -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Teri" wrote in message ... The drive had started with windows 98 on it then somebody installed Windows
XP on it. I was given the pc and I decided to take it back down to Windows 98. I had formatted the drive and it was a clean install. BUT something happened during format to make me think it may be the drive going bad. It kept saying something about "trying to recover allocation unit" "Ron Badour" wrote: Are you trying to install over the top of the existing system or is the hard drive blank? Pop the cover off and determine what brand of hard drive you have. Then go
to the drive maker's web site and download their diagnostic software. It runs from a floppy disk and will determine the health of your drive. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Teri" wrote in message ... To elaborate on Ron's suggestion:
If you don't know what brand the drive is, you can download the limited-use free edition of OnTrack Data Advisor from this location: http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/#dataadvisor When you click the download link on that page for Data Advisor 5.0 Free edition, you will be taken to a page to register with the OnTrack site, then you will be able to download the diskette creator file. The downloads are diskette creators. They are to be run once from a working Windows system and will guide you through the process of extracting the Data Advisor onto a 3.5" floppy disk. Download and Use Instructions: http://www.ontrack.com/dataadvisor/downloadinfo.asp As far as I know, Maxtor's diagnostics will also work with any brand of drive, and the older versions of Seagate Seatools also, but I am not sure about the new version.
