Default Hard Drive not detected at boot-up

I just had my motherboard replaced, with new memory added(256), and Intel
Celeron 326, 2.56GHz added. Boot-up stops at the message: "Warning: The boot
devices have been changed. BBS boot priority will be affected. Please enter
setup to check."
So, I go to "Standard CMOS Features, select 0 Slave (which 0 for Hard
Drive), and then do Auto Detection.
The 120B hard drive is then detected. I can return to the boot page and
continue booting (F1). Now it works fine. There must be a way of
reconfiguring so the hard drive is recognized automatically. Any idea of the
change I need to make?
Also, why does the memory show as only 191RAM instead of 256? Is this a
factor limited by Windows 98? Thanks.

Did you look at the BBS (BIOS Boot Sequence)? Did you save the settings
when you exited? 256 mb of ram: how many sticks of memory and what size?
It sounds like maybe there are a couple of 64 mb sticks in the machine and
one is not working right which would knock the total down to 192 mb. On
board video or something else could be using 1 mb.

Could also be a 64MB onboard video unit, Ron/Ronjay - since Ronjay doesn't
say what the mobo is (yet?) it's a little difficult to tell!

Default All the drive letters on my 2nd HDD and CD drives were re-assigned.How can I set them back under win98 SE/DOS?

Tuesday, August 01, 2006 3:13 AM
All the drive letters on my 2nd HDD and CD drives were re-assigned. How
can I set them back under win98 SE/DOS?

Well now, I a problem. It seems I tend to take things for granted.
Tonight, as in 3 1/2 hrs ago, I noticed that my second drive wasn't
showing up as accessible. It was however physically visible from both
CMOS, OS/2 FDISK and DOS/Win98SE FDISK. But, the drive letters were
gone.

I thought it was my SyQuest EZFlyer 230 drive casuing the problem, so
I remarked out the driver lines in both the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
files.
No go, as my PC refused recognized the proper drive letters. it was
assigning
the CD drives letters assigned to Logical partitions. So, for about an hour
I honestly believed that attempting to install OS/2 warp 4.52 had somehow
destroyed the data on my second hard drive, and rendering data on one
garbage.

Looking at the SCANDISK.LOG showed that the last time all the drives
were accessible
was 05:55PM on Monday, May 29, 2006. And that the drives above F:\
weren't scanned on
12:28PM on Tuesday, June 27, 2006. So I reset the CMOS values, and
entered Win98SE Safe
Mode and discovered that the System folder was not showing any drives
above E:\.
The second drive was not being seen or accessed by the system.

So I relented. I rebooted.
And when Win98SE started normally I discovered what had actually happened.
Some how all of my drives above E: had been re-assigned. ??!!

Here what it SHOULD look like:

[First Drive] LETTER [Second Drive] LETTER [CD/Removable
Drive LETTER]
================================================== =================================
PAUL W98 C: W98 APPS 1 D:
W98 GAMES 1 E:
W98 APPS 2 F:
W98 GAMES 2 G:
PAUL ARCHVE H: W98 GAMES 3 I:
SyQuest EZFlyer
230 J:
CD-ROM 48X
K:
CD-RW 52X
L:

And NOW it looks like this when I view the drives in the win98SE System
Folder. Only then
was I able to access the drives. I also found that none of the drives
were corrputed.

[First Drive] LETTER [Second Drive] LETTER [CD/Removable
Drive LETTER]
================================================== =================================
PAUL W98 C: W98 APPS 1 D:
W98 GAMES 1 E:
CD-ROM 48X
F:
SyQuest EZFlyer
230 G:
W98 APPS 2 H:
W98 GAMES 2 I:
PAUL ARCHVE J: W98 GAMES 3 K:
CD-RW 52X
L:

It seems the CD drives and EZFlyer drive were moved up the assignment
priority. I cannt imagine
how this happened, except maybe when I was examining the drives under
OS/2's FDISK, maybe it some
how re-arranged the drive assignments without my knowlegde. I can't
think of anything else.
I tried to re-set them, but I'm stumped. Going back into FDISK (OS/2 or
DOS) did nothing. I
even looked through CMOS and could find nothing. I really can't seem to
recall how to re-assign
drive letters under DOS/Windows. I've been using OS/2, Linux, and now XP
for about seven years now.
Under OS/2 and XP I use the Device Manager, but I can't remember how
it's done under win98SE.
The win98SE Hardware Manager lists the drive letters, but the drop down
box letting you change
them is greyed out.

Can anyone out there help me out here, and get my drive letters back to
normal?
