Memory Upgrade Performance Question
I am currently on a DELL (1GH) with 256Meg. Could I expect a dramatic
increase in performance if I upgrade to 1Gig Memory? I know its sketchy but if anyone has done it they would know. Thanks Bob PS By Dramatic I mean my current booting takes 2-3 minutes. |

Increasing memory should make it run faster, though you may not notice it depending what you are running on it. By booting do you mean time it takes to see your desktop/start bar, or time it takes to finish running startup programs? Maybe you need to look at what is running on startup. |

For more (1 GB) they have workarounds. Good call though. |

Thanks for the reply with the good information.
I guess I'll just buy a new PC Bob "Atari" wrote in message ... I am currently on a DELL (1GH) with 256Meg. Could I expect a dramatic increase in performance if I upgrade to 1Gig Memory? Hello, BobT!
You wrote on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 22:54:19 -0500: B Thanks for the reply with the good information. B I guess I'll just buy a new PC I was using my WinME pc with 256 meg for over 6 years. Decided to add a 512meg module about 2 months ago. I had already implemented the recommended Vcache adjustment in sytem.ini prior to this. System running quite smoothly with a total of 768meg now. Much cheaper than a new pc. |

Memory Upgrade Performance Question/ Thanks for the good input
My thought is that you would gain more by trimming the fat off of your
startup axis. I used to have a whole list of sites that covered the subject.....I'm sure someone in the NG still has them around, but, here is one I found. It's worth a go if your startup is bigger than it need be. http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html Heirloom, old and just a thought "Ogg" wrote in message ... Hello, BobT! Only you can judge what level of power will meet your needs.
Trimming the startup is a wise choice. But with the higher necessities of protection needed today, you will have to make some choices. I was running one machine with a 650 Duron w/ 512M until about a year ago. It met all my needs then, but was being slowed tremendously by possibly AVG free or ZA. Don't remember for sure anymore, but suspect it was ZA since it checks every file in certain modes to make sure they were not hijacked. Seems that speed improved when I turned some features off. I was also behind a router firewall. Dell I suspect means Intel. I haven't played with their hardware in a long time. First would be checking the upgradability of the MOBO. You might be able to find a good processor and RAM on the cheap on ebay. A year ago and more, a lot of people were thinking the same way and it was actually cheaper for me to upgrade MOBO package. That is I got MOBO, 2.2G Barton, faster RAM, and 64M video card for less than just CPU and RAM. Make sure your PS is up to such change. The 2.2GHz overcame the slowdowns I was seeing with ease. Also a lot depends upon the type of OS CD for installing you got with machine. And check you don't break licensing rules. Hardware upgrades should be no problem, I think. If you got a Dell customized CD, that is it won't install without seeing that MOBO, or it has programs included from Dell, there may be ways to work around if not in license contention.
