Cannot delete duplicate recycle bin on external USB hard drive

WHAT HAPPENED
While copying files to the USB hard drive, it froze leaving some files and
folders partially transferred. I deleted those, so they went to the Recycle
Bin. Later when I tried to empty the Recycle Bin, I received this error:
Cannot delete file: File system error (1026). I read the MS KB entry, but
those situations don't apply here and also it doesn't offer a solution that
works in my case.

I tried renaming the Recycle Bin from "RECYCLED" to "wasRECYCLED", hoping
that I might then be able to delete the contents. THe result was two recycle
bins.

I even tried booting from an Acronis True Image bootable CD, which is in
Linux, but it wouldn't allow me to delete the files either. In that
environment I received the error: Failed to delete folder "wasRECYCLED".
Please make sure that the folder is not opened by another application.
Acronis True Image did show me the invisible contents of "wasRECYCLED": two
folders named DE6 and DE7.

CURRENT SITUATION
Now back in Windows 98SE, "wasRECYCLED" no longer has the Recycle Bin icon
but now has a regular folder icon. However, Properties still shows it as a
System file.

HELP PLEASE
How can I delete that folder and its contents? How can I remove its System
file status, given that its on a USB hard drive (if I boot into DOS, it
won't have drivers to see and mount the USB hard drive).

features. If you have DOS drivers that enable
access to USB drives you can to a DOS PROMPT
DELTREE X:\wasRec*.*
DELTREE Y:\Recyc*.*
and so on: and at reboot just one \Recycled Bin
will be created (empty) for each (connected) drive
and set with the right ATTRIButes (Hidden & System,
probably.)

If your DOS prompt does not make USB drives
accessible, just use Windows / Properties to remove
the system attributes recognised by Windows. You
should then be able to remove this folder(s) at will.

using Maximus Decim Native USB drivers to access the USB drive.

folder and choose "Properties" command? When I do that, the "System"

I didn't think it was necessary to play with attributes when doing a
DELTREE. Nevertheless-- IF you are sure "wasRECYCLED" is useless & ready
to go, maybe try...

(Turns off hidden, system & read-only attributes.)
(c) DELTREE X:\wasRECYCLED
...where "X:\" is the drive letter that holds the folder,

C:\deltree /?
Deletes a directory and all the subdirectories and files in it.

To delete one or more files and directories:
DELTREE [/Y] [drive:]path [[drive:]path[...]]

/Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to delete
the subdirectory.
[drive:]path Specifies the name of the directory you want to
delete.

Note: Use DELTREE cautiously. Every file and subdirectory within the
specified directory will be deleted.
