Reinstalling IE6
Those 'errors' are quite normal and can be ignored - your IE problem can't!
When did IE fall apart? - Have you perchance reinstalled ME over itself? Have you tried a repair of the existing IE install? Reboot to Safe Mode Go to Add/Remove Programs and try a repair of Internet Explorer from there. Go to the entry for 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools' in Add/Remove Programs Click on Remove - and click on Repair on the window that pops up Reboot on request to Normal Mode If the above entry isn't there, you first need to uninstall all the patches applied, then do the repair, then reapply the patches The patches are listed in Add/Remove under the names 'Internet Explorer Qxxxxxx' highlight, click Remove - reboot if requested. Repeat until the MSIE6SP1 entry appears - then repair as above. Dear Noel,
Add Remove show two separate entries IEQ903235 (with an invalid INF which prohibits removal) and IEQ905915 and the unspecified missing files also prohibit repair. Reinstalling IE6
Dear Mike,
No particular problem with IE6 itself other than the unspecified error messages which prevent reinstallation and/or repair. Unfortunately Tracker Software indicate that IE6 must be reinstalled to update "comctl32, shlwapi.dll, shell32.dll, crypt32.dll and cryptui.dll" required for their latest version of PDF-XChange. Sincerely, Mr. David Oltmann "Mike M" wrote in message ... Code 22 errors can be safely ignored. See MS KB 272291 - "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering" Problem Device Entry in System Information Tool" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=272291) for more information. You mention reinstalling IE. Before attempting to do so what exactly are the problems you are experiencing? -- Mike Maltby David Oltmann wrote: Am unable to fully reinstall IE6 (in OEM WinMe-Win98upgrade) due to unspecified "missing files" most likely missing due to crash and ghost in reinstallation by some competent technician. Reinstalling IE6
"Unspecified error messages" So what exactly do these unspecified
messages say? Remember that many errors that appear to be from IE are the result of having unwanted malware present on a PC. As for Tracker's ODF-XChange are you sure that this can be installed on Win Me and doesn't require for example IE6 SP2 which can only be installed on XP and later and not on Win Me. -- Mike Maltby David Oltmann wrote: Dear Mike, No particular problem with IE6 itself other than the unspecified error messages which prevent reinstallation and/or repair. Reinstalling IE6
Dear Mike,
Message is the same in either reinstallation of repair. "Installation cannot be completed due to missing files". Thereafter one must clean the registry to prevent the "resume setup" from reappearing on each and every reboot. No malware with several malware scanners and Tracker Software PDF-XChange 3.5 is suitable for WinMe. Previous versions run without flaw. Sincerely, Mr. David Oltmann "Mike M" wrote in message ... Reinstalling IE6
Thank you. Out of curiosity what are the versions of the files
comctl32.dll, shlwapi.dll, shell32.dll, crypt32.dll and cryptui.dll (Right click, Properties, Version)? Shell32.dll however can't be the wrong version since only one version has ever been released for Win Me and that is the version included as part of the initial Win Me install. This file has never been updated. The other files you mention are however updated when IE is updated and also some by later hotfixes so knowing their versions could help in solving your problem. You might want to try the following. You may just be lucky and get away with using the fix that follows to force the IE6 install however if that doesn't work may I refer you to Noel Paton's site (http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm) on reinstalling IE. Using Windows Explorer first set it so you can view hidden system files and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files" and Apply). Create a new folder C:\Program Files\Internet Backup Locate the folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information. Move the contents of this folder to the folder C:\Program Files\Internet Backup you created above. Now try installing IE6 again from the start in Safe mode, re-selecting all components that you want using the Advanced option, even those already bolded, and see if this works. If this works you can now safely delete the folder C:\Program Files\Internet Backup and its contents. If not, copy the files back to the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information folder and delete the C:\Program Files\Internet Backup folder. -- Mike Maltby David Oltmann wrote: Dear Mike, Message is the same in either reinstallation of repair. Reinstalling IE6
David.
Please supply the version number for these files. You will find this as I previously mentioned on the Version tab of their Properties sheet. I can't see how shell32.dll can be either missing or incorrect. The time stamp is correct for the only version released for use with Win Me and this forms part of the initial installation. The version number being 5.50.4134.100. The dates for the other files suggest they might be: comctl32.dll 29 Aug 02. This is correct for IE SP1. There is no later version. I suspect you will find it to be v5.81.4916.400 shlwapi.dll 31 Aug 05. This is the latest version for Win Me and first installed as part of Hotfix 896688 and also included in the more recent 905915 hotfix released earlier this month. I think you will find the version to be 6.0.2800.1740 crypt32.dll 12 Sep 02. This is correct for Hotfix KB329115 [MS02-005]. These is no later version for Win Me. I think you will find this to be version 5.131.2133.6 So, in summary, I believe the files you mention to all be the latest versions released fore Win Me. It would appear that your problem is not that the files are missing, they clearly aren't, and that the error message you are seeing when attempting to install IE6 SP1 (which is already installed) has a different origin as does that when you attempt to install PDF-XChange. It's possible that you are going to have to go the IEradicator route and rip out IE and then reinstall it afresh. -- Mike Maltby David Oltmann wrote: Dear Mike, comctl32.dll - August 29, 2002, 7:07:38 AM - August 29, 2002, 7:07:38 AM shlwapi.dll - August 31, 2005, 5:49:30 PM - August 31, 2005, 5:49:30 PM shell32.dll - no date of creation - modified June 8, 2000, 5:00:00 PM crypt32.dll - December 4, 2003, 12:20:34 PM - September 12, 2002, 3:51:08 PM cryptui.dll - no date of creation - modifiedJune 8, 2000, 5:00:00 PM Note: Your suggested fix didn't work but did elicit the notice that the files are missing from the "Installation Folder".
