Default duplicate drive different letter

Not sure where to post this so I'l try here.

After doing a reinstall of win98, I have two drives showing the same
info.

It used to be like this (which is how I want it):
a:floppy
c:hard drive
d:hard drive (used for storage)
e:cdrom
f:cd writer

After reinstall it shows:
a:floppy
c:hard drive
d:hard drive (used for storage)
e:???duplicate of d: above????
f:cdrom
g:cd writer

Anyone know how I can fix this to get it back the way it was?

Thanks in advance,
Geo.

The problem comes up now/then at this site.

(1) "START button, Find, F/F, Autorun.inf".
I guess one of those can do it, if in a root directory, such as
"C:\" or "D:\".

(2) Some drivers can do it, purposely. Did you install something big
lately?

(3) "START button, Run, SysEdit". Is there a "SUBST" command in
Autoexec.bat? That would do it.

(4) Did you create a CVF (Compressed Volume File)? That would do it.

(5) "START button, Run, MSInfo32". Use CTRL-Mouse to highlight relevant
info & the Edit menu to Copy it...

Windows-managed swap file on drive C (6458MB free)
Available space on drive C: 6458MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive D: 6232MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive E: 773MB of 2792MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive F: 7979MB of 7979MB (FAT32)

Available space on drive H: 7620MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive I: 6174MB of 6174MB (FAT32)

(6)
(a) "START button, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt"
(b) FDISK /Status
(c) Use the "MARK", outline text with mouse, "COPY" button to post the
results.

You have two physical hard drives with one partition each. That is
certain by "Fdisk /Status". There is no real Eartition, only C: & D:.

Yet MSInfo32 indeed shows an E:\ looking much like D:\. That can be done
for valid, useful reasons. For instance, the TrueImage file browser
someone recently said will set up a virtual drive letter when invoked to
view an image it created.

| (2)Yes, recently installed network (Ethernet) card and driver

I don't know. If you had no Eartition before that, maybe it did it. I
can think it WOULD do it, if you have connected to another computer &
that one is sharing a partition. It would show up to you likely as an
Eartition. However, I can't think why it would be showing you your own
Dartition that way.

Have you perhaps somehow mapped the D: drive as a network drive?

How many disk drives do you see in Device Manager? If you select
Properties - Settings, what do you see as the "current drive letter
assignment"?

Could/should he be mapping his own D:drive, or should he be mapping a
drive/folder on someone else's computer?

Please look once more, and make sure the info you have supplied here is precise.
You have at least one typo, and I want to make sure nothing is left out, or out of
order. (The typo is NED, it should show NEC....correct?)

You show the first listed drive as having the letter E:, and the second having C:.
This would normally be shown in the reverse order in Device Manager. Which way is
it actually being listed in yours?

Do either of those Type47 drives, on their Settings tab, show *any* other letter
listed along with the ones you posted, under Current Drive Letter Assignment, such
as C:,D:?

In your reply to PCR, you report that FDISK /STATUS shows:
Disk Drv Mbytes Free Usage
1 14653 100%
C: 14653
2 4118 100%
D: 4118

Something is obviously amiss. Are you using any sort of Windows-loaded, third-party
letter assigner software; or any type of boot manager or third-party partitioning
software?

Here are the usual "rules" for how DOS and Windows assign drive letters:
