windows 98 on clean hard drive
If I am able to actually find a copy of the full version
of windows 98 and install it on my old computer's clean hard drive, will I be able to get all of the drivers I need to keep my computer running? If so, where can I obtain them? Any thoughts? |

Finding drivers is NOT that hard, but you will be a much happier person if
you do 99% of your research before you begin the Win98 install. This is not to say that you can install the drivers ahead of time. It's just better to gather what you need first. The Win98 install will get the machine running, although you may not have sound and the screen might be ugly until the drivers are installed. Two questions: 1) Do you have any of the machine's original documentation? 2) Is there any version of Windows running on the machine now? "mosing234" wrote in message ... Agree with Doug. If the old computer is not working and you don't know what
hardware it has, take the case off to identify the hardware (modem, sound card, video card, etc). Write down any numbers or writing on the cards so you can get on google.com and search on them. Once you know the exact nomenclature of the hardware, you can use google.com to locate drivers. For information on installing W98, go to: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "mosing234" wrote in message ... I do have original documentation, but no quick restore
cd. I have tried using a quick restore from another computer, running Windows ME, but the screen looks like I started in safe mode. At any rate, there is nothing on it now and I am in search of a windows 98 full version to install, since that is what origianlly came with the computer. When I obtain that I will take yours and Ron's suggestions to get it up and running. Thanks. -----Original Message----- Finding drivers is NOT that hard, but you will be a much happier person if you do 99% of your research before you begin the Win98 install. If you've got a blank hard drive go over to Ebay and get a
WIN98 or a WIN98SE OEM they have plenty of them there and they're cheap. Fortunately most of them seem to be generic but watch out for the branded ones i.e. CDs stamped with IBM etc which is of course no good if you're not using a IBM machine. Unfortunately the retail and upgrade versions of WIN98/WIN98SE are getting hard to find these days -----Original Message----- I do have original documentation, but no quick restore cd. windows 98 on clean hard drive
My Win98 machine's at work, so I can't name the Control Panel steps from
memory. Maybe Ron knows: In CP, one of the applets lets you view hardware profiles and update drivers. In one of the tabs of that applet, you can get a complete printout of hardware info, which includes drivers. This doesn't help if you're dealing with a blank hard drive, but if you're about to wipe or upgrade a machine with an existing Win98 installation, you're nuts not to do this printout before any further steps are taken. There's a wealth of information in the printout, some cryptic, but much of it useful, especially when you're hunting for drivers later. "Ron Badour" wrote in message ... Agree with Doug. windows 98 on clean hard drive
Hi Doug
CP, System, Device Manager I can't remember stuff like that either and that is why I took so long to switch to XP--I needed W98 to give directions. Now I run XP and have MS Virtual PC installed--W98 is installed in VPC. This allows W98 to run inside XP so I can switch over to W98 without rebooting. It is so cool !!! -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Doug Kanter" wrote in message ...
