Reinstalling IE6

You may be right about another source of the problem though all virus etc.
scans seem to come up empty.

I can't see how shell32.dll can be either missing or incorrect. The time
stamp is correct for the only version released for use with Win Me and
this forms part of the initial installation. The version number being
5.50.4134.100.

The dates for the other files suggest they might be:
comctl32.dll 29 Aug 02. This is correct for IE SP1. There is no later
version. I suspect you will find it to be v5.81.4916.400
shlwapi.dll 31 Aug 05. This is the latest version for Win Me and first
installed as part of Hotfix 896688 and also included in the more recent
905915 hotfix released earlier this month. I think you will find the
version to be 6.0.2800.1740
crypt32.dll 12 Sep 02. This is correct for Hotfix KB329115 [MS02-005].
These is no later version for Win Me. I think you will find this to be
version 5.131.2133.6

So, in summary, I believe the files you mention to all be the latest
versions released fore Win Me. It would appear that your problem is not
that the files are missing, they clearly aren't, and that the error
message you are seeing when attempting to install IE6 SP1 (which is
already installed) has a different origin as does that when you attempt to
install PDF-XChange.

It's possible that you are going to have to go the IEradicator route and
rip out IE and then reinstall it afresh.

Not to belabour a point but after reading a bunch of Noel's methods of
ripping out and reintalling WindowsMe and IE6 etc. am left to wonder
1. Why my keyboard is not recognized in "safe mode" and whether there is an
adjustment that can be made in Me to correct this?
2. What is the difference in setup.exe and OEMsetup.exe?

Is this a USB keyboard? If so have you enabled USB Legacy support in the
system bios?

2. What is the difference in setup.exe and OEMsetup.exe?

I'm unclear as to the relevance of this question if removing and
reinstalling IE or have you now decided to throw in the towel and go for a
clean install of Win Me? There is no need to reinstall Win Me if all you
wish to do is to remove IE using IEradicator and then reinstall IE6 SP1.

If your Keyboard is USB, then you'll need to enable Legacy USB support in
the BIOS

not sure about the setup/OEMsetup diff - but I'd steer clear of the
OEMSetup, if I were you

Hmmmmm!
As I may have mentioned I had a competent technician do a
reinstallation some time ago. Unfortunately, as I have discovered from your
comments he neglected to enable the Legacy emulation you mention for the
proper keyboard. Also thanks to your comments I have been able to find the
workaround posted in the knowledge base (ie. standard keyboard) which is a
whole lot less dangerous than fiddling with the BIOS it seems. Such is
important when one might end up having to reinstall Me and cannot type in
safe mode or during emergency boot..
I note as well as the comments made regarding the dangerous nature of
this "IEradicator" http://www.georgedillon.com/web/freeware/ierad.shtml
that it is specifically for IE versions prior to 5.5. Is there are version
available for IE6?

Is there are version available for IE6?

The same version works equally well for IE5.5 and IE6 hence Noel and my
suggestions that you use that product.

IERadicator comes in two forms - which is why I am very specific about which
one to run, in my page - run the wrong one, and you may have to reinstall ME
(again?) to get back the full functionality!
Note that the article you refer to was written in 2000 - and IE 6 came out
shortly before it was updated in 2002 - there are ways to reinstall the
MSJVM after removing it, but since most software now uses the Sun Java
engine, it seemed unnecessary to put that up there.

They are in any case totally wrong about their warning! (although, as I
advise, you obviously need to back up your favourites first!) IIRC,
IERadicator no longer claims to be compatible with Win95 - which is what
they tested it on
Things move on a lot in 4 years!!
