Default Why is everything saving to notepad?

Iam not the most savy person with computers, any help would be greatly appreciated! ......my problem is, that almost any file i save is for some reason being saved in notepad form, even files with images and graphics are somehow saving in notepad.......now the problem is if its a larger file that notepad cannot handle, it will save it to notepad anyway, and when i try to open it, a dialogue box appears that says "this file is too large for notepad, would you like to open with microsoft word?".....so i click "yes" and then the file opens in microsoft word but is encoded........does anyone know what i can do about this?....is it something in my default settings??.........any help would be greatly appreciated!!

This seems like a problem with your file associations. You can prove it by
selecting a file you know is not a text file, such as a graphic file.
Right-click the file and look at Properties - you should be able to see that
the filename extension is not TXT, but it's a graphic extension, such as
JPG. Open your graphic viewer, and use the File / Open menu option to
access the file to demonstrate that it is a graphic file. If you can't see
the filename extension for a file in the file's properties window then
choose View / Folder Options / View in an Explorer window and make sure that
'Hide file extensions for known file types' is NOT checked.

Once you have proved that a particular file extension is correct for a
particular application (eg, it's a graphic file that you view in your
graphics viewer), select (left-click) an example of the file in an Explorer
window and right-click the file while holding the Shift key. Select the
application that you used to open (or view, or whatever) this file type, and
make sure the 'Always use ...' option is checked. Select OK. Files of that
type will now be associated with the selected application. Repeat for other
file types that aren't notepad files.
