File *Open With* list
Hi,
Can a MVP or savvy user, pls. give the registry path to the Open With List (the list of available programs that are seen) ? These are the registered programs to Windows. Thank you, Star |

I learned something new...... thx. you.
I'm pretty familiar w/my list, I see microsoft only (with small m) don't recall it being in my list before. Has an unassociated executable icon..... application not associated, like MSHTA. Curious, Jeff, do you see microsoft in your list ? I know Gary doesn't fire up his old Windows 98 or 98se puters too often these days. Of course, this is no *biggy*!! Thx. There isn't a "list" in the Registry, per se. That list is dynamically
generated from the Registry--can't recall exactly what branch of the Registry is scans, but it's reading a number of keys and listing the Registered executables. -- Gary S. If a file association has an "Open" command option with a command line, then
it will be included in the Open with list. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Star" wrote in message ... "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Star, I don't think MSHTA should have any FileType, much less one with an Open command. HTA files are code that can be run from an HTML file. ** No Gary, I don't see MSHTA listed in folder options view file types. However, MSHTA is in my *open list* (shift, rt. click, open with). I can always remember MSHTA being in my list. The icon looks like command.com (of course, Command.com isn't in my open with list). Useful, but also quite popular mechanisms for running malicious code on systems (they aren't *meant* to be used that way, but that's the way it is.) In your seat, I'd be wondering about malware. May even be malware that has been excised, with just the FileType remaining. I'd run a deep check for virus or spyware, then I'd delete that filetype in Folder Options if it's still there. ** Have new clean install of Windows, Spybot, checks good.... AdawareSE, checks clean, PC-cillin 2005 shows clean. I've never had a virus, only some minor crap, low risk.... a download mgr. Ahhh.... I have Spyware Blaster too, all my ports test **stealth**. Don't think I could get anything too bad on my puter. Since, I don't see MSHTA in file types, how can I remove it from the open with list ?? Thxs. Star Star -- Gary S. The 'open' command items are not the only source for this list - there are
other keys somewhere with items that also get included. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Star" wrote in message ... I learned something new...... thx. you. Unless someone who knows for sure can tell you, Star, I think you're
stuck with it. Jeff Richards mentions that there are other sources for those entries in the list, but while I have vague recollections, I don't know exactly where those Registry values would be located. If it were me, I'd do a Registry search, and I'd probably recognize the problem when I saw it. Then I'd save an Export of the key involved, delete it (or edit it) and see if that removed it from the OpenWith list. Then I'd research to find out whether the entire key was a rogue key, or if it was edited improperly, or even if it was just a random error in writing/saving the Registry. I don't *think* you're quite up to that task. Would be a great way to learn more about the Registry, though, so I leave it up to you, s. -- Gary S. I suggest you leave it alone.
MSHTA is under HTML Application in File Types, using the extension HTA The Open key is in the Registry he HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\Shell\Open\Command If you don't use Open With (I don't, except to answer the odd question) then you will not see the list. ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, "Star" wrote: "Gary S.
