Daylight Savings Patch

Hi Gary,
I hope that you can come up with a simpler way to do this. I went to your
website and downloaded the Patch and read the instructions. No, I had a
problem understanding the instructions on what to do. Maybe an exe. file
would help. So now I have the file on the desktop of my computer.

If it's an INF file, did you right mouse click on it and click install, or
just double click it itself, to get it to install?

Bill,
I did not install it yet. All I did was unzip the file to a folder. I think
there were 4 or 5 files in it. One of them was a registry key, another was
the instructions that said something about backing up registry first. I quit
there because I just did not understand. Today, I read that Gary was not
finished with the instructions. I will wait until he finishes his
instructions. Maybe someone can come up with a great alternative, something
simple I hope. I need simpler instructions.

Follow these instructions, line-by-line. It is VERY straightforward.

Use the Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe) utility

This tool allows you to create and edit time zone entries
for the Date/Time settings in Control Panel.

Download the Tzedit.exe utility package now.

Double-click on this file, which is a self-extracting file
- in other words, you don't need WinZip.

It will expand into 2 files - TZEDIT.EXE and TZEDIT.HLP
Just make sure that you note where they will expand to,
which should be the folder C:\Program Files\TZEdit.

You are now finished with the TZEDIT.EXE which you downloaded.
The following references to TZEDIT.EXE relate to the expanded file
now located in the C:\Program Files\TZEdit folder.

Now,

1 Switch to the C:\Program Files\TZEdit folder,
and double-click on TZEDIT.EXE to run it.

2. In the Time Zones list, select your time zone, and then click Edit.
For example, if you live on the West Coast of the USA,
click (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana, and then click Edit.

3. In the Edit Time Zone dialog box,
click to select the Automatically set Daylight Saving Time check box.

4. Specify the correct daylight saving time start and end dates.

To do this, follow these steps:
a. In the Start Day box, click the number of the day,
the corresponding day of the week, and the month that you want.
In other words, click Second, click Sunday, and then click October.
b. Select the time that you want to start daylight saving time.
In other words, select 2:00 AM.
c. In the Last Day box, click the number of the day,
the corresponding day of the week, and the month that you want.
In other words, click Last, click Sunday, and then click February.
d. Select the time that you want to end daylight saving time.
In other words, select 2:00 AM.
e. In the Daylight Bias list, select the time change offset to be used
when daylight saving time is in effect.
In other words, to set the clock forward 1 hour,
leave the default setting of +1:00.
f. Click OK, and then click Close.

This updates the database used by the Date/Time applet,
but DOES NOT impact your current Time Zone selection settings.
In other words, Daylight Saving Time is still going to start on April 1st this year
as far as your computer is concerned, unless you do something
to make it pick up the database change that you just made.

The "something" that you need to do is very simple.

5. a. Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel,
and then double-click Date/Time.
b. Click the Time Zone tab.
c Select a different time zone than your current time zone, and then click Apply.
d Select your current time zone, and then click Apply.
In other words, change to another zone, and then change right back again.

That is it.

On your computer, Daylight Saving Time will now start 3 weeks earlier this year,
and will end 1 week later, in accordance with the new policy.

If this sounds complicated, I assure you that it is not.
It took you longer to read my post than it will take you to make the change.

I see you also have posted that on an ME machine you did have to do the
extra step. It may depend upon how you advance the date as to whether
you need to do it. As you may have noticed, John John brilliantly
noticed the same Time/Date Properties requestor (in Win98 at least) is
used to advance the date & to select a time zone. Although it is true
you did not report you used that requestor to it, nor that you switched
from & back to your own zone-- IF you did use it, likely changing the
date & time caused the new info to be saved too.

It could also be that the old setting in that Registry key was passed
too when you advanced the date, even if done in DOS-- and I guess that
still would cause the switch to EST.

But my other thought of NisTime or such doing it probably is very wrong!
It would instead get you back to the correct time & date-- or just
explode from the effort!

Be careful in the Registry. Don't make any changes. But, to look at
those keys...

"START button, Run, RegEdit", & navigate to...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\TimeZoneInformation

That is,
(a) Click plus signs, beginning left of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE",
& ending left of "Control".

(b) Click "TimeZoneInformation" in the left pane.
It should now show its data in the right pane.

(c) "Registry Menu, Export Registry File"
The key (& any subkeys) will write to a file of your choice--
with a ".reg" extension.

(d) Scroll the left pane back up, & do the same for...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Time
Zones\Eastern

NOTE: The last plus sign you click is left of "Time Zones".
Then, click your own zone under it, which I think may
be...
"Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana"

Here is more to know about a ".reg" file...

By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the Registry.
To alter the default behavior...

(a) "START button, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab".
(b) Scroll to & click (highlight) "Registration Entries".
(c) Click the "Edit" button.
(d) Select (highlight) "Edit" in the window.
(e) Click the "Set Default" button.

After that, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open in Notepad for
examination. To merge it into the Registry, R-Clk it & select "Merge".

I check the registry on one of the systems that I had patched and not
tested by setting the time forward. Indeed, TimeZoneInformation was
the old way. Then I set the time and applied it. Indeed
TimeZoneInformation was ready for 2007. I had fallen prey to a
version of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. I am now a believer
in the extra steps.

MGDX likely pulled/posted the file from the related forum discussion on
MSFN. Generally they go through/pull apart the creation part within a
discussion related to the files MGDX ends up posting on the site. So if
your
really interested in the creation process and/or source, a quick search

Thought it might be [WinZip for creation of installation exe],, seems we

Sourceforge [and I realize some are wary of that] has some other useful

It appears to open with the proper zone already selected, but I guess in
rare circumstances it may not.

It already normally will say 2:00 AM. In the United States, wouldn't
that be the Second Sunday of March...?...
