Default Fastest video card that is supported on the W98SE cd?

Hi all,

What is the fastest video card that is supported automatically
on the Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition OEM cd?

What is the fastest video card that one can still get drivers
for that will install and work under W98SE?

thanks,
charles....

Well, you have the list of drivers that are included in Windows 98SE CD. Go
to Control Panel | Add New Hardware | Next | Next | "No, I want to select
the hardware from a list" | Display Adapters

After that, it's up to you to figure out which one is the "fastest". And,
since I presume you're intending to buy one, I'm betting that none of those
listed is easily available today.

What is the fastest video card that one can still get drivers
for that will install and work under W98SE?

Again, this is up to you to research. Besides, I'm not exactly sure what you
mean when you say "fastest". There are a lot of different parameters
involved in determining the "quality" of a video card, and "speed" is only
one of them.

Thanks for the feedback. I will use the select hardware from list
trick. I am not a gamer but I do want fast windowing movements,
no smearing or delays when moving windows around.

thanks,
charles.....

Why are you interested in the cards that are supported automatically? For
best performance you should be using a much newer card than the ones that
were available when W98 was released.

Yup. I'd be shopping for cards that I want, and *then* checking for 9x
compatibility. Here's a couple:

http://tinyurl.com/yf5w96 (Buy.com, PCI)
http://tinyurl.com/yeh33u (EBay, AGP)

Or, go to the manufacturer's drivers downloads pages and see what you can
figure out, like he
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Using those pages, you can determine which models are supported, then go
looking for them at EBay, Buy.com, Amazon.com, even Bizrate.com or similar,
using model numbers.
