Default Anti-Virus / Anti-spyware

Can anyone recommend a Win98SE compatible anti-virus / anti-spyware
software package?

I am currently using PC Guard, which is provided by my cable provider
(Telewest) but it seems to keep causing my machine to crash.

I am not a fan of most of the available packages, and prefer to run specialised
individual apps.

Have a look here for more info about what to use to prevent and remove spywa
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
and
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

There are a number of good anti-virus apps out there. I would avoid both Norton
(Symantec) and McAfee with a Win98 system. I currently use and recommend a free for
home use anti-virus, Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I don't recommend Avast on a very old and slow system though....a processor of less
than 400-500 MHz may see delays.

I've been using ZoneAlarm 6.0.607.000 and AVG free 7.1.405 for some time
with no problems. ZA in the newer version is not supposed to support W98,
but the older version works just fine for me. You'll read all kinds of pros
and cons for different ones, but the worst I've read about either is that ZA
is hard to remove, and AVG is not quite as good as Avast at detecting some
of the more recent plagues.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was being lazy, and since 9x support was being
discontinued I didn't look into it, but as you would no doubt point out,
there are items listed which would clearly be important to the free version.
