Free firewall for win98 PC.
A friend has got a win98 PC that he's trying to set up. He wants to install
a freebie firewall, I suggested ZoneAlarm, but he says ZA doesn't work on win98. Can anyone recommend a suitable FW? Or can ZA be made to work with win98? |

If your friend connects to the Internet through an Ethernet adapter, I recommend putting an inexpensive broadband router between his computer and the cable/DSL modem. The router would act as a firewall, with no software required. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Free firewall for win98 PC.
Kerio personal firewall version 2.1.4 works great with 98 and is easy
to configure. We, like many, got jolted through a message from ZoneAlarm that our latest update is "not supported on your operating system"--they are no longer supporting 98 because Microsoft is not. This was the first intimation we had that MS would yank support on July 11, 2006 (ten days later). Kerio 2.1.4 is an earlier version of Kerio Firewall and you will find it at several sites on the net: one I just found with a quick browse is http://www.dslextreme.com/users/surferslim/tpf.html. When I researched the need to replace ZoneAlarm I found that, contrary to popular belief, firewalls-- unlike virus software-- do not need updating. The firewall companies do update them to gain continued income streams from their product. But this just produces more and more bloated software that slows your system down. What a firewall does is watch for incoming (and especially) outgoing access to the internet that you have not authorized. Kerio 2.1.4 does this well and without running in huge chunks of memory. If you like ZoneAlarm, go to their site and look at earlier (and lighter quicker) versions that will also run on 98. After the shock wore off, I did a completely new, fresh install of 98 from the original CD on a second hard drive, reinstalled all security updates from Microsoft Update (the last was June 30, I believe) and archived this onto a backup USB drive using Acronis True Image backup software (or you can use the software to archive onto a couple of CD's). In case you ever need to reinstall 98, you can do it from this image, Then I opted out of Internet Explorer 6 (just labled the icon "DO NOT USE") and the same with Outlook Express. They are both very "leaky". We went with Mozilla Firefox as a browser (it will import all your IE settings, favorites, etc) and Mozilla Thunderbird as an email client (the same imort features). Both are free. I liked those so much that I decided to explore Linux as an alternative to 98-- and installed it on a second hard drive of our older HP Win98 machine. We are learning Ubuntu Linux for the next year or two (can boot to either that or 98 for the time being) and after that will say goodbye to Windows 98 and also to XPpro, which I use on my laptop, and go entirely with Linux. It's fabulous-- the OS and apps are all free of charge, there is a huge support community, they are much more bug free than Windows, and not the object of so many trojans and viruses. Another great flavor of Linux to try might be Mepis. Both Ubuntu and Mepis have "live CD's" so you can temporarily run your machine from CD Rom only and just see how Linux goes for you. Take the CD out and you're back to good old 98. If you like Linux, you can also do an nstall on a 6 - 8 gig partition of your hard drive (if you dont have a second one installed) and have a choice to boot to either 98 or Linux, like we have done. By the way, Linux will read FAT32 hard drives that are the foundation of Win98 files, so you have access to your files. And Linux' "Open Office" suite will read and write files in MS Office suite format. Open Office is also free software, and very well featured (I know, having used the MS Office Suite in personal and business settings for years now). Linux is a breezy operating system that runs very well on some of the older machines that still do nicely on 98. Ours is like a new puppy now-- fast and happy. I have always been comfortable with MS products, but their business model is not stable, I'm afraid. The OS gets more and more bloated and they push people to upgrade. Support for XP Service Pack 1 is being terminated in October. They want folks to buy their new Vista. Best wishes - if you are hesitant to install an "older" version of a firewall, do a little reading on the net. You will find that that particular version of Kerio keeps coming up as one folks are still using, and for good reasons, and one they recommend for Win98. Free firewall for win98 PC.
I am running W98SE with ZA and the version I am running is 6.1.744.001.
(Which I think is the latest and final version for this operating system). As another poster has said, go to the web site and download this version. I have this version saved as a file on the hard disk. Alan "Steve Winograd [MVP]" wrote in message ... In article , "Chris Mitchell" wrote: A friend has got a win98 PC that he's trying to set up.
