Default Critical Updates Disabled

I've come across the following dilema. After installing,
from purchased CD, Borderbund Click Arts I see a few
disturbing things.

1. Free AOL is added to desktop (ok, it's bundled
software and I can remove this).

2. Review of Belarc shows two critical updates disabled.
UPD323255
UPD811630

I looked at the Microsoft pages that the Belarc 'details'
link provides me with and don't get a definitive answer as
to whether these updates are really necessary. I think I
should system restore to re-enable the updates (I SR'd the
last time Borderbund was installed a couple days ago but
another user re-installed it rather than wait for me to do
it grr) but have a feeling they may not be needed.

My question is:
Do I still need these updates?
-Running IE 6.0 SP1,Q89293,Q837009,Q867282,Q891781,Q890923.

Appreciate any feedback.

Disabled or broken? Have you at some time reinstalled Win Me over itself?
If so then this would have broken several critical updates and the patches
will need to be reinstalled even though a visit to the Windows Update site
will not suggest that they are needed. The reason being that the flag in
the registry showing the patch as being installed is still present
following the Win Me reinstall.

Both the patches 323255 and 811630 are deemed critical and I would
strongly advise you to reinstall both of these patches. The easiest way
to do so would be for you to download them from the Windows Update
Catalogue. (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp).
You will probably find 811630 as the first listed of the critical updates
for Win Me with 323255 a bit over halfway down the list.

They're broken. You are correct.

No, I haven't installed ME over itself. The patches show
as broken after installing Borderbund.

Do you know of the MS site that I can download the updates
Outside Of windows updates? These patches don't show as
being available for download there. I guess I could fish
through the registry and remove the keys you elude to (if
you tell me which they are) but I'd rather have the site
so that I can save it and avoid touching the registry.

Thanks for your help, Mike. It's much appreciated.

Outside Of windows updates?

KB,

Please read my original post again. I explained exactly how and where to
obtain the updates, that is from the Windows Update Catalogue. This is
NOT the Windows Update site and unlike the Windows Update site contains no
detection mechanism but instead allows you to pick and choose which
updates you wish to download and subsequently install.

Sorry, Mike. You had already given me what I subsequently
asked for. The site will be saved so I won't ask again.

Do you have any idea why installing a Borderbund Click Art
program would break critical updates?

Three cheers for Belarc! Hip hip it's broke, hip hip it's
broke, hip hip it's broke.

Thanks again, Mike.

Sorry KB,

I've never used any Broderbund products so have no idea as to whether they
cause the problems you saw or not and if they do, why they do.

Cheers,

If it's a common problem you may be able to Google for it or on their
techsupport forum (if they have one).
