clean install of Win2K
Hi Mike, this is NOT a hacked version of Win ME. It came with the IBM system.
The 2 Recovery CDs are titled IBM Product Recovery CD 1 and CD 2 NetVista. Could it be since IBM put these together, they may have modified the Setup? Again, this is definetly NOT a hacked version of Win ME unless IBM sent it that way. "Mike M" wrote: I hate to repeat myself but that is not a Win Me startup screen which has just four, yes FOUR options. You are clearly not running or installing a copy of Microsoft Win Me. Win Me does not support command mode. All I can suggest is that you are attempting to install a hacked copy that attempts to restore real mode DOS in which case you would be better served by posting your queries to a newsgroup that supports such a hacked version (if one exists). If you are running Win Me it is impossible to go to a command prompt in the way that you say you are doing other than if you boot from a Win Me boot floppy. The removal of real mode DOS was one of the "features" of Win Me. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows helpMe wrote: Hi Mike, The screen that comes up on reboot is titled "Microsoft Windows Millennium Startup Menu" There are actually 6 options. clean install of Win2K
Hi hM, I would concur with Mike in that a Microsoft (retail) version of
WinMe has only 4 options on the Safe Mode startup screen - for the very reasons he and I discussed earlier. However, as yours is an OEM version (albeit IBM) then all bets are off! OEM (Recovery) CD's can - and obviously do - contain 'non-standard' modifications introduced by the OEM. Mike's description as a 'hacked copy' might sound alarmist, but technically, he's probably correct. And, even though I'm sure yours is a legitimate IBM copy, it obviously doesn't conform to the MS spec. - which is the version we are working with. So, what next? Back to trying the step-by-step option as I suggested earlier and/or a trawl around the IBM site :- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...id=MIGR-4S237K to see if you can get assistance there. There *may* still be one or two tricks left in the arsenal - but they will be totally dependant on what IBM recovery disks have actually installed on your HDD (even at this incomplete stage of your installation process) and then it will also depend on whether you are able to retrieve some 150MB of files (IF INSTALLED!!!) and burn them to a CD. Also you will probably need the 25 digit Key Code - assuming IBM supplied it - but we are talking OEM here g Good luck - and let us know how you get on with the s-by-s method. Bed time!! The version of Win Me you have is quite obviously "hacked", that is
"modified". By it's very nature it is impossible for Win Me to boot to a command prompt since the version of io.sys that forms part of Win Me does not support such a mode. The only way to boot to a command prompt with Win Me is to use the version of io.sys that is used on a boot floppy. See MS KB272488 - "Windows Millennium Edition and Real-Mode Functionality" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=272488). For you to see option 5 and 6 on the boot menu indicates that at the very minimum io.sys has been modified. Given this fact what else has been modified and to what extent are those modifications causing your problems? I don't know the answer to either which is why I cannot continue to try and help. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows helpMe wrote: Hi Mike, this is NOT a hacked version of Win ME.
