Screen Resolution Reset on Reboot
I've had this problem in the past and am encountering it again now.
The problem is as follows: 1) Fresh installation of Windows 98 SE. 2) Screen resolution changed from default of 640x480 with 256 colours to 800x600 with 24-bit colours. 3) Restart the computer. 4) Resolution has returned to 640x480 with 256 colours. If you set the resolution at 800x600 with 24-bit colours then 'shut down' the workstation, then turn it on again, the resolution is fine. It only seems to reset when you 'reboot'. I have tried 3 different graphics cards in the machine and they all have the same effect. Albeit they are the same model graphics card. Has anyone encountered this before? If so do you have any advice or a workaround? Thanks :-) |

Hello again,
I've tried 7 - 8 different drivers from various places for this machine and the problem persists. Shutdown and the settings are fine. Reboot and the resolution and colour depths are reset :-/ Do you have any further ideas on this? Thanks. Reboot the machine so that any thing that may be in the temp folder that needs
to finish does so. Delete the contents in the IE temp folder: Right click the IE icon on the desktop. Click Properties. Under the General tab click the "Delete Files" button, put a check in the box for "Delete All Offline....", click Ok Ok. Open either MyComputer or Explorer. Expand the tree to C:\Windows\Temp Click once in the right pane, press CTRL+A and press DEL. Close out and shut down if you have more than 1 video adapter installed. Remove all extra video adapters leaving one installed. Boot to Safe Mode. Right click MyComputer. Click Properties Device Manager tab. Remove any/all devices listed under Display or Video adapters. Close out and reboot. Install the drivers for the one video adapter installed. -- Brian A. Hi again,
I can confirm that the IE and system temp folders were both empty. Something that is noteworthy however, is that the m/b has an on board gfx card. I disabled this in the BIOS as I just cannot seem to locate drivers for it at all. This is why I added the PCI card, but now have the loss of resolution problem. I tried enabling the on board gfx again, but disabled it via Windows System Manager. On reboot all settings were lost again. I really have no idea what else I can do to correct this. Other than writing a program that resets the display to 800x600 via the Startup folder every time I log in. Thanks. Have you tried the mobo or integrated gfx chip manufacturer for the drivers.
Use the free Everest Home to help identify them. http://www.lavalys.com/products.php?lang=en Create a new folder named Everest and extract the contents of the download to that folder. Open the folder and double-click everest.exe to run the application. If you want an extra hand in searching for the drivers, please provide make/model for: Computer Motherboard CPU Graphic chipset -- Brian A. Using the Everest software you linked me to, I was able to indentify that the
componants and motherboard were not as advertised on the case of the machine. It was a HP with upgraded insides. I managed to find working drivers, and as yet, haven't had the resolution reset on me. Thank you for your help. Very much appreciated :-) "Brian A." wrote: Have you tried the mobo or integrated gfx chip manufacturer for the drivers.
