Norton protected recyle bin stubbornly remains
The Symantec Removal Tool cleared most of my Symantec debris and with
guidance from here I have removed the rest. However one thing stubbornly remains: Norton protected recyle bin. There must be a little executable somewhere because if I right click 'properties' the Norton dialogue boxes for recyle bin appear. The Norton app. must be somewhere in Windows - I have looked everywhere else - as it prevents the normal Windows recyle bin from opening, but I cannot identify it. I have sent email to Symantec asking how to remove, but that may take some time..any ideas here? Roger R |

Norton protected recyle bin stubbornly remains
The correct procedure is to disable the NP Bin *BEFORE* uninstalling Systemworks:
On your desktop, right-click the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, and then click Properties. On the Global tab, click Use One Setting for All Drives. On the Recycle Bin tab, select Standard Recycle Bin. On the Recycle Bin tab, in the Title field, change the text to "Recycle Bin." On the Norton Protection tab, uncheck Enable protection, or click Remove Norton Protection. Click Empty Protected Files. Click Purge All, or OK. Click OK again. Then uninstall Systemworks and remove all related Registry keys. See also: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=170 Here are the Registry keys AFAIK that should be removed: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=181 If you still have problems, I recommend going directly to the last procedure in this article, to delete the Recycled folders from a DOS boot. If you have more than one drive/partition, then you must repeat the steps listed for each partition's bin. Norton protected recyle bin stubbornly remains
Thanks for your advice,
In line responses below: "glee" wrote in message ... The correct procedure is to disable the NP Bin *BEFORE* uninstalling Systemworks: Oh dear.. On your desktop, right-click the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, and then click Properties. On the Global tab, click Use One Setting for All Drives. ok On the Recycle Bin tab, select Standard Recycle Bin. No such tab. Only two tabs available 'Global' and 'C'. On the Recycle Bin tab, in the Title field, change the text to "Recycle Bin." On the Norton Protection tab, No such tab available. Here are the Registry keys AFAIK that should be removed: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=181 Checked out registry keys described. Two of the three keys identified are in my registry, the last mentioned, property sheet handler, is already gone. (perhaps the other missing key calls the app for the missing tabs) I have saved copy of registry this morning, but not yet deleted these keys. Will report back after deleting keys. If you still have problems, I recommend going directly to the last procedure in this article, to delete the Recycled folders from a DOS boot. If you have more than one drive/partition, then you must repeat the steps listed for each partition's bin. How the Recycle Bin Stores Files - http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=136517 Try that later. How the Recycle Bin Stores Files - http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=136517 Implemented the proceadure on the TackTech site, in particular the deletion of the specified registry keys. It made no difference at all. I tried restoring the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID \{645FF.... key from a reg back up made when NortonSW was operational. But this too made no difference to the Recycle Bin icon, its properties or action. My registry activities demonstrated that when Regedit is used to Import a file it doesn't work by replacing the old file with the new one but only adds additional entries. Other apps more accurately call it 'Merge', since it does not remove redundant keys that are not in the new file. Replies from Symantec on the Protected Recycle Bin issue are slow going. Regardless of brief but precise descriptions of the issue, I'm still at the 'click Start to begin' phase with them. Perhaps my next step will be re-install Notrton SW in the faint hope that the protected recycle bin will be restored and can then be uninstalled before NSW. Roger R |

Just in case, following the uninstall routine described by Glee and others, this reinstall does not bring the results you want. It will give you any additional "keys" and changes that were made, for you to track down the problem. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/ BLOG http://peoplescounsel.spaces.live.com/ Public Notice or the "real world" "Most people, sometime in their lives, stumble across truth. Bummer. I do not know what else may be involved in whatever version of Norton you
had. Symantec support *should* be able to help you, but if you don't want to wait, try the reinstall/uninstall, but be sure to track it as MEB suggested in his reply! -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Roger R" wrote in message ...
