Concern over security issues in Windows
I am becoming more concerned that security issues continue to arise with
Microsoft Windows. When will Microsoft be able to make operating systems that are more secure? The following web sites describe my concern: http://eeye.com/html/research/upcoming/index.html http://eeye.com/html/research/upcoming/20041115.html http://eeye.com/html/research/upcoming/20040802-C.html All of your comments are welcome. Ye shall always have security issues in *any* OS. (And if you're concerned
about security, for G-d's sake upgrade to WinXP SP2!) -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE) Dan wrote: I am becoming more concerned that security issues continue to arise with Microsoft Windows. I run a dual-boot with 98SE (for old games and because I like 98SE) and
XP-SP2 on two hard drives with 98SE being in Fat32 and XP-SP2 being in NTFS. "PA Bear" wrote in message ... Ye shall always have security issues in *any* OS. Suggest you don't install any networking facility on the Win98 side. =

Well, see....
If it's only the "gaming" OS, Dan's not likely to remember to keep it up = to date, regularly run anti-malware scans, etc. If he doesn't think of = the Win98 side as an internet tool, he's likely to forget about = intrusion from that direction. Thanks for you opinions, Gary. It does take extra work to make sure that
both XP-SP2 Pro. and 98SE are up to date. You could almost say it is a daily chore. : What do you think about open source and how it is changing the software landscape. I am a big fan of Mozilla Firefox and use it for most of my browsing but I use Internet Explorer when necessary. bg "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Well, see.... I haven't the time to keep up with Open Source apps or platforms. While =
I'm for it in theory, I'm also more aware than many seem to be that just = because Firefox, for instance, isn't apparently as vulnerable to attack, = it's a fallacy to think that it is inherently more secure than IE. It = probably has *more* inherent vulnerabilities, in fact. It just doesn't = have as many hackers working day and night to break in. But the more = popular Firefox gets, especially if it gains in corporate circles, the = more likely bad guy is to target it. A properly weighted comparison = would almost certainly show IE to be *more* secure, by far, than = Firefox. Add to that, IE is an integral part of Windows these days. Just = because you use a different web browser doesn't absolve you of keeping = IE up to date. Ignoring IE updates while running Firefox just makes your = system *much_more* vulnerable. IMO, for the masses, Microsoft is safest these days. Any stats that = purport to show otherwise are using funny math. As for Linux and other = OS platforms, they're great for customized corporate server uses and = geeks. I can't imagine that "average" users would ever benefit from = running Linux on their PCs, though. I see MS as the great in-between. = Mac on one end, totally locked into proprietary hardware and software = (on a relative scale), Linux off in the wild, wild frontier land, and = the great egalitarian, Microsoft, sitting fat and happy in the = middle-ground. When the goal is to get the job done with minimal muss or = fuss, and relatively maximal support, and yet retain maximum = flexibility, I'll vote for MS every day and twice on Sundays. --=20 Gary S. Well Microsoft has released a critical update(s) that addressed one of the
issues in the eeye.com website. The only other issue they now list is one that affects Windows 2000 which I do not use but I would be wary in regards to people that use Windows 2000.
