Default CPU very busy in Windows ME

When I open the system monitor I see that, when the PC is
in rest with only windows displayed, the CPU operates at
50-75%.

I have used Easyclean to ensure registers are clean and I
have no dataminers (ran Lavasoft).

Does this sysmon.exe give a good picture of CPU activity?

How can I find out what is causing this. I feel that when
connected to internet via a fast adsl, the screens build
up slower than they used to.

Win Me's sysmon is notoriously poor at recording cpu usage using a faulty
algorithm for this function. May I suggest you download yourself a process
viewer that will not only give you a more accurate indication of
instantaneous cpu usage but also tell you which processes are using cpu
cycles at any instance together with their accumulated usage over time.
Knowing the process involved should then make solving any problem much
simpler.

Suitable viewers include the old but still functional WinTop (part of the
equally old Win95 Powertools available from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d...oy/Default.asp)
through TaskInfo 2003, unfortunately no longer free, (www.iarsn.com) to
SysInternals Process Explorer (www.sysinternals.com where you will also
find many other useful tools and utilities).

I have used Easyclean to ensure registers are clean and I
have no dataminers (ran Lavasoft).

Oh dear. You could well have removed some essential entries. Let's hope
not.
