Default Win98 Daylight Savings Time Manual Update Required-- reminder 1

The following is required to do in the USA only...

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=914387
How to configure daylight saving time for the United States in 2007
.......Quote.......
INTRODUCTION
Because of the Energy Policy Act, daylight saving time is extended by
four weeks in 2007. This change starts on the second Sunday of March and
ends on the first Sunday of November.
.......EOQ.........

The time has come to follow the instructions in that article, or,
perhaps a bit more clear...

(a) Click TZEDIT.EXE.
It opens with your time zone selected.
(b) Click the Edit button.
(c) Change the Start Day to... Second, Sunday, March.
(d) Change the Last Day to... First, Sunday, November.
(e) Click the OK button.
(f) Click the Close button.
(g) Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel,
and then double-click Date/Time.
(h) Click the Time Zone tab.
(i) Select a different time zone than (the one you are set at),
and then click Apply.
(j) Click (back to the one you were set at), and then click OK.

"Note Steps i and j are required for the new changes to take effect",
the article says, as does TZEdit's own help screen.

Do so before March 11, 2007. If you cannot get TZEdit.exe from your
personal copy of the Resource Kit, get it from...
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/tec...Reskit/CONFIG/
...., as Laura Fredericks did discover, after likely 1/2 ton of clicking.

Much thanks to her for the reminder about all this. I've done it- but
only time will tell what actually will happen on those two new Sundays.

Except you don't have to go thru all of that if you use the file I
referenced.

And for those who consistently use XP dual boot or use similar with 3rd
party boot manager, don't bother. XP has its own autoupdate for daylight
savings time, will update the bios clock in tandem. Win98/98SE, in this
case, just goes along for the ride. You might just turn off daylight
savings time adjustment in that case in 98/98SE.

I never heard of the BIOS clock being involved, & I suspect it is
XP-irradiation to blame. But, yea, for that, Windows Update will work—
but for XP-mutants only!

You mean that self-extracting/executing .inf you discovered...!...
http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q928388.EXE

It's 100% on your head, Colorado, if anyone blows up over that! It does
appear to be more comprehensive than the TZEdit procedure, but I think
that's overkill. It seems to make the change for every possible time
zone.

I got the old Dell Dimension 8250 from my friend, installed XP and
now I'm good to go. Fwiw, I just installed the official DST patch for
WinXP. ;-)

It's been great using Win98 these past nine years, but now, it's time
to bid you all a fond farewell.

I'm pretty sure the Win98 DST Easter U.S. and Canada patch I posted
with work. Of course I won't know, since my old Win98 is now turned
off. FOREVER. sob

I hope everyone has a great holiday season. It's been fun, but
nothing lasts forever.

Having used a 3rd party boot manager for 6 years running, its a fact. The
PC's clock is updated. The rest of the OSes, if daylight saving time is
auto-adjusted for, will decrement/increment the clock another hour per OS.
Yes, the update I spoke of only works with XP. And that was crux of it.

For me I always leave that turned off anyway, since for 9x it usually
disorganizes the desktop icons when it does its thing. I like to change my
own time manually anyway irregardless of what OS I'm using at the moment.

Very well, then. Really, I was waiting for Terhune to make a final
pronouncement on that .inf, as I believe he had promised to do. However,
as it seems to incorporate the same change (as InCtrl5 showed)...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Time
Zones\Eastern "TZI"
Old type: REG_BINARY
New type: REG_BINARY
Old data: 2C, 01, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, C4, FF, FF, FF, 00, 00, 0A,
00, 00, 00, 05, 00, 02, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 04, 00, 00,
00, 01, 00, 02, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00
New data: 2C, 01, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, C4, FF, FF, FF, 00, 00, 0B,
00, 00, 00, 01, 00, 02, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 03, 00, 00,
00, 02, 00, 02, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00

.... to the Eastern Time Zone (US & Canada) that TZEdit did to mine, I
guess I'll add it into my Master Post— on your head & his, IF he
finally comes through with a confirmation!
