EXPLORER caused a page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE. Can't start
I have a problem with my son's three-year-old Dell PC: Win98 SE, 833, 40g HD.
It was filled with malware that I removed with Adaware and Spybot. Microsoft notified me that there were a number of MS upgrades available. I applied the upgrades one evening without monitoring the progress. The next morning Windows wouldn't run because of several missing DLL files, SHLWAPI and WININET, specifically. I loaded these to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM but now I am unable to get the PC to boot, even in safe mode. Pressing F8 or holding down the CTRL key has no effect, it tries to start and then gives me the message "This program has completed an illegal operation and will be shut down". I've visited several Microsoft KB articles, but none has helped me. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Thanks, Ron, for the quick response, but I can't boot my PC in safe mode so I
can't edit the system.ini file as suggested in the Microsoft article link you provided. None of the methods Microsoft suggests, pressing F8 multiple times during the boot, holding down the CTRL key, inserting a non-system disk and then pressing F8 when the invalid disk message appears gets me to safe mode. Any other ideas? Thanks for the prompt response, but I can't even boot my PC to the point
where I can follow the advice they give. I can't get into safe mode. I have tried all the methods Microsoft give to get into safe mode, pressing F8 repeatedly as Windows starts, holding down the CTRL key, or pressing F8 after trying to boot with a non-system disk in the floppy drive. Any other ideas? The article didn't say to boot to Safe Mode. It said to boot to Command
Prompt Only (DOS)... CTRL or F8 .......Start...Quote from Windows 98 Secrets (Livingston/Straub)..... Ctrl or F8: Starts the Windows 98 Startup Menu. You need to hold down the Ctrl key before the DOS bootup process begins. If you have quick fingers you can press the F8 key in between the end of the power-on self test & the beginning of the DOS bootup phase. .......End........ Here is an alternative method for recovery... Explorer & IE are basically one & the same. Therefore, may as well try this write-up, originally from a Gateway WEB site, which is a temporary reversion to an earlier version of IE... ONE THING: Do nothing more than stated here using Winfile, because, if you move a file with it, you will lose that file's LFN (Long File Name) in the destination. Desktop Icons and Taskbar Are Missing Affected Products: Software, System CDs Affected Operating Systems: Windows® 98 , Windows® 98 SE, Windows® Me ISSUE: After starting Microsoft® Windows® 98 or Windows Me, the taskbar is missing and there are no icons. When starting Windows, the taskbar may flash on for a brief second and then disappear. The only display visible is the background wallpaper and the mouse cursor. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE brings up the Close Program dialog box, but selecting End Task on the items on the list may not have an effect. When the computer is started into Safe mode, the issue still occurs. Running Scanreg /Restore does not resolve the issue. Sorry, I've been away. I followed each step in your post and no luck. When
I tried finally to reinstall a earlier version (5.5) of IE using the command: "rundll setupwbv.dll,IEMaintenance..." I received the error screen about the following DLL files: "5.0.2614.3500 MSHTML.DLL exists but needs to be greater than version 5.50.4807.2300" and the similar lines about SHDOCVW, SHFOLDER, SHLWAPI, URLMON, WININET being earlier versions than is required; additionally, it said that BROWSERUI.DLL is missing. Last thing I have done is to run SETUP.EXE from the Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup folder, but I got the error: "A previous program installation was never completed. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before uninstalling Internet Explorer. Setup will now close." What else can I try? Will I need to reinstall the OS? I have never done that but I'm willing to try. When/if that has to be done, will it wipe out all the modifications and changes that have accumulated over the years this PC has been used, e.g., IE favorites? Thanks again for your help. I can only find a ie5setup.exe file in the Windows Update Setup Files
(Window~1 in DOs) or in Program Files\Internet Explorer (Progra~1\Intern~1) directory. But when I try to run it either from Winfile or Progman I get this error message: "A previous program installation was never completed. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before uninstalling Internet Explorer. Setup will now close." This PC probably was never upgraded to IE6. I'm wondering if that was attempted at some time and never completed successfully. At any rate, where does this leave me? Thank you for your time. Look for a file named wininit.ini in the Windows folder and if found, name
it wininit.old.
