Default C Drive

Hey,
I posted a question about the C drive in an earlier
post. I had mentioned that i couldn't delete anything off
of the C drive. Someone wrote me back and suggested
deleting in safe mode or running system restore (it
happened recently). I tried SR but no matter what date i
did it at i was always unsuccessful (it said "SR is
unsuccessful"). Can this be fixed? I don't want to do
the safe mode thing cause that means every times i want to
delete something i have to switch into safe mode :-(. Any
ideas. Thanks a ton!!!!!

Your System Restore problem:
It is possible that your problem is due to your PC not having been patched
with the 290700 patch which has been required since Sept 2001 for the state
manager to create usable system restore checkpoints.

You can see whether you have installed the patch or not by checking the
version of the file smgr.dll in your windows\system folder. If v4.90.0.3003
then you have updated but if v4.90.0.2533 you have not and need to do so at
once.

Note that when installing the patch it will flush your restore folder
and create a single new checkpoint on completion. This cannot be avoided
since checkpoints created with the old version of smgr.dll cannot be restored.

It is also possible that at one stage you did install this patch but have
subsequently reinstalled Win Me over itself using the Win Me CD. Doing this
causes the original, broken, version of smgr.dll to be reinstalled.

If required the patch can be obtained either via Win Me's AutoUpdate, the
Windows Update site or from the Microsoft Windows Catalogue accessed from the
Windows Update site. For more details see MS KB 290700 - "Checkpoints That
You Create After September 8, 2001 Do Not Restore Your Computer"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=290700) which also has a link to the
patch.

Your inability to delete any file:
Sorry but I have no sensible suggestion to make here. How long has this been
happening? What change did you make to your system immediately before this
problem started?

Mart's reply was actually...
"... try deleting in Safe Mode to see if that works."

to which I might add (if it's not toooo much trouble, of course)...

Do you have the same problem on other drives or partitions?
Is your Recycle Bin empty?
Can you create files? Can you then delete them?

Rick

Any ideas. Thanks a ton!!!!! David

Rick,
Yeah, so it isn't tooooo much of a problem. But just for
the sake of it i did try to delete the stuff in safe
mode. And guess what? It didn't work! What a suprise.
What's new in a computer? They never work! And yes, i
can install stuff, Is my recycle bin empty?-Well, just a
second-there i emptied it-now hold on-there i tried to
delete something and guess what? Wait don't guess i'll
tell you-It didn't work :-((((((((( (you get how i
feel?). And lastly, no this is the only drive that this
problem is in. And you know what(i'll just tell you)?
It's the C drive. The computer had the nerve to pick our
main drive. I mean if it had done the l drive that would
have been fine, since there isn't a l drive. :-). So, to
put it shortly, nothing has work so far, and essentially,
i am desperate. You know that old say? When you get mad
shoot your computer (you probably don't since i just made
it up on the spot). Well that where i am moving towards.
I am beginning to believe those rumors about computers
having a life of their own...
David :-).

Hey,
Sorry man i was just joking. I wasn't trying to be mean.
Anyway, I did try to delete something on the C drive in
safe mode and it didn't work. I also tried emptying the
recycle bin and then deleting stuff-it didn't work. This
is the only drive that this problem has been occuring in.
I can create files and install stuff, it is just the
deleting part that is the problem. If you have any ideas
that would be great. Thanks again.

Mike,
Sorry about that new post I made. I was replying to your
suggestion about the problem with the system restore
program. I went to see what the version was and this is
what i found-v4.90.3000. That matched neither of the
versions that you told me about. What does that mean?
Sorry agian :-(. Thanxs for your help.

I'm sorry but that makes no sense. The only publicly distributed versions of
the file smgr.dll are as I mentioned in my previous post v4.90.0.2533 and
v4.90.0.3003. To check the version of a file select it in Explorer, right
click and then click Properties and open the Version tab.
