how can I determine the manufacturer of my cd-rom drive?

Take a look in device manager under CD-ROM.

If not there you may have to look at the drive.

I have no idea where your drive manufacturer may have put the name and model
on your drive.

You may have to 'get at the drive' to see.

Seems a bit odd that you have to know that.

You should not have to download a driver for an EIDE drive for operation
under Windows.

Does the BIOS see the drive when you boot? If not:

Check wiring, jumpers (Master/Slave/CS) as appropriate.

Why do you think the secondary channel was disabled ?

You went out of your way to hide the response which I've separated below.

Some employers disable an ability to use external media to avoid many
problems in an environment that the IT has little control like Win9X.
