Computer Freezing Up
This is a kind of unusual problem. My brother in law has
a laptop he purchased used with Windows 98 already installed. He did not get a disk. The other day he wanted to use some new program and was told to insert his Windows 98 disk -- he couldn't, of course. When he was over here he asked me if I had one. Several years ago I bought a computer with 98 on it and I did not get a copy of the disk either - but once when I took it in for repair it came home with a disk (obviously one they had copied) in the CD Rom. I kept it. The store has gone out of business and the computer donated to charity. Anyway, I gave BIL ghe disk and told him perhaps he could copy the files he need off it. Turned out that my 98SE was different from his and he was told to enter his code number from back of package. He couldn't -- and the computer froze up. Now he can't do anything. Will have to wait until he goes back home to take machine back where he bought it for help -- unless someone on here knows what to do to unfreeze the computer and go back to where he was. Thanks. He is probably out of luck. Any laptop should come with a CD (recovery or
modified OEM version) as laptops do not like standard retail versions of W98. He should have went back to the place where he bought the machine and asked for a disk. Now it appears he has loaded an illegal copy of W98 to the drive and does not have the product key for whatever version of CD that is. I doubt seriously that MS would issue a replacement key for illegal software. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo wrote in message ...
