font size used in Character Map to make it easier to read? I can
change the font with the GUI, but not the size. Yes, I know about
clicking on a character and moving with the arrow keys, but I'd like
to be able to scan the whole thing quickly without squinting. My eyes
just aren't as good as they were when the win98 computer was brand new.

I've fond a low-tech way: I've created a document listing many of the
common ones, and have it pinned up near my desk! I find I've learnt many
of the common ones (well, the ones _I_ use a lot), like the above one,
anyway.

A more taxing problem is finding an easy way of entering such codes on a
laptop or netbook that doesn't have a numpad: is there any utility that
lets me hold down an unusual set of keys (Ctrl-Alt-Capslock or
something), and enter the codes, either on the normal 1-0 keys or the
faint numpad on the letter keys? I can I know enter them the official
way, but that's very tedious, since I have to turn numlock on, enter
them, then turn it off. (Yes, I know I could use an external pad.)

Thanks for that, looks most useful.

Anything similar that covers the Unicode characters too? (I'm not sure
if those are available under '98.)
