Default Mike...BootMenuDelay=5

hi there,
mike, on that boot-up choice i am trying to change from 30sec to 5sec
as u suggested. i opened msdos.sys file with notepad (?) and added
BootMenuDelay=5 to the list of 3 rules already in the options section and
closed, saving the changes. it still stays at 30sec til normal boot-up.
i noticed the file says it has to be a certain amount of bytes. is that
why all those x's are there ? do i have to change anything else in there or
open the file with something else ? or maybe when i back out of file i should
save as and replace existing file....hmmm...where in options section do i put
this rule ?...thanks much..

Check the file again. Does it still contain the line BootMenuDelay=5? If
not then make sure that you remove the read only attribute from msdos.sys
before saving the altered file. Do this by right clicking on the file in
Explorer, selecting Properties and on the General tab unchecking the Read
Only box. Check also that there isn't a BootMenuDelay=30 line later in
the file after where you added the =5 line. Check also that you are
adding the line in the section [Options] and that you haven't misspelt
BootMenuDelay.

i noticed the file says it has to be a certain amount of
bytes. is that why all those x's are there ?

Yes.

where in options section do i put this rule ?...thanks much..

Anywhere will do but as I said above make sure that there isn't a second
similar entry.

As an example the msdos.sys on my Win Me box here starts as follows:

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootGUI=1
BootMulti=1
AutoScan=2
WinVer=4.90.3000
BootMenu=1
BootMenuDelay=3
BootMenuDefault=1
Logo=0

after which come the several lines beginning ; containing lots of "x"s

You have had all the help that is necessary to solve your problem. What
you now have to do is use that help and if you still cannot get the boot
menu to behave as you want work out what conflicting entry you have in
msdos.sys. Without seeing the entire contents of your msdos.sys file I
don't know what more help others can give you. I'm sorry but you do have
to do some of the work yourself.

Check that there isn't a second entry for the delay at the end of the file!

This may be a silly point; but because you are using notepad did you
choose to "save as all files" and then tack on the .sys? Because if you did
not most likely it saved it as msdos.sys.txt which of course will not work
and you would then have 2 files one the original *real* msdos.sys and
msdos.sys.txt
Also you would need to right click on the msdos.sys file and uncheck the
read only attribute and system file check boxes other wise the os will
refuse to overnight the msdos.sys file.

Oh, so are you saying my info in *this* thread is in error? or are you just
ticked off that I answered with something that you didn't think of? I see
where you sniped the OP's post, I can only guess because you didn't want
anyone to see that the info I was giving was accurate and on point. Come on
now are you really trying to say that what I said is in error? surely you
are not? Because you know that saying it is in error is an indefensible
point don't you.
