.ICO files not showing a 'picture'.
My .ICO files in Explorer (and indeed, anywhere) show a
generic file icon, and no longer show "themselves". How can I reverse this, w/o doing a system reset? Something in the file associations? |

After first running your latest (updated) AV utility and checking that you
haven't got a virus (or other nasties) then try the following:- First - make sure that you have your Folder Options set so that you can view System files and folders, and Hidden Files. Then - Open Windows Explorer and go to c:\Windows - look there for the file called 'ShellIconCache'. DELETE IT reboot, and windows will rebuild the file. If that doesn't fix it, then you'll probably need to increase the size of the cache - download and install the 'IconCache Fix' from http://www.aumha.org/reg1.htm Mart "Rastignac" wrote in message ... .ICO files not showing a 'picture'.
Thanks for the quick reply. None of the suggestions have
restored the original function, however. File Association is currently telling me that .ICO is of file type ICOFILE & is opened by unknown application, which seems to be the default. What is the association on your machine? Great page of patches, there. I've bookmarked it! -----Original Message----- After first running your latest (updated) AV utility and checking that you haven't got a virus (or other nasties) then try the following:- First - make sure that you have your Folder Options set so that you can view System files and folders, and Hidden Files. .ICO files not showing a 'picture'. FIXED
Okay, for anyone reading this with a similar problem, use
ActivIcons utility from http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html (slider bar on left, move it to where you have checkboxes for "view icon files". I discovered this reading back in this newsgroup. Thanks to Mart for the time & thought. -----Original Message----- Thanks for the quick reply. None of the suggestions have restored the original function, however. .ICO files not showing a 'picture'. FIXED
I don't *think* that there is a 'default icon viewer' included with WinMe.
WinExplorer normally shows icons - usually integral to .exe and .dll files but also .ico (and some other) extensions. My XP box doesn't show an association for .ico extensions. However, it's a long time since I used ActivIcons utility and remember it was a useful gadget when I did. I'm glad the you've now fixed the problem and thanks for the feedback.
