Default I need a file

A users computer is giving a VFat error message on boot up. I found it needs
the file ifshlp.sys placed back in the system folder as it mysteriously
vanished. I have no idea where my predecessor left all of the CD's although I
did find 95B/w2k/wxp/w2k3/wnt just no 98. Is there any way I can use either
of these cd's to reinstall this file? or could you point me in the direction
of a site where I could download this file.

Please and thanks,
Me.

many installations of win98 placed the cab files on the drive, often in
\windows\options\cabs
browse the folders on your boot drive and find if it exists and if exists is
filled with about 80 almost consecutively named .cab files
or
Start
Find
Files or Folders
Named "*.cab"

for a folder containing about 80 almost consecutively named .cab files
If Found
Use

Start
Run "SFC"

Extract 1 file from Installation Disk

and follow the prompts, to point the browser to the folder containing the
..cab files

DO NOT USE THE OTHER FUNCTION OF SFC
it WILL kill your pc deader than dead requiring reinstall of everything OS
and almost all applications if you allow it to replace updated .dll files
with the old versions in its database
DO NOT USE Scan for altered files
one last time for emphasis
Do not use scan for altered files

Thanks for the response AlmostBob. But, one of the first things I did was
search for local cab files. Unfortunately came up with zip/nada/zilch/squat.

not start up.

And you've verified that the file doesn't exist on the system anywhere? Have you
made sure that "Show All Files" is enabled in Folder Options?

I don't know of any online source for this file. MS doesn't permit their files
to be distributed in this manner. You'll need to find a CD. And make sure of the
version of Win98 you're using (98 or 98SE). I don't know how much difference it
makes (because MS destroyed that once-useful tool called the DLL Help Database)
but it would be wise to match versions if you can.

This error message can be caused by a incomplete or corrupt =
"c:\msdos.sys" file.
Start the computer in "Command Prompt", type=20
"c:\windows\command\edit c:\msdos.sys", press "Enter" and make sure the =
file
looks something like this:

[Paths]
WinDir=3DC:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=3DC:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=3DC
[Options]
BootGUI=3D1
