Default External HD not showing up/.pdr files

My external HD for my Dell Inspiron 8100 used to show up
as my E: drive but for whatever reason has suddenly
stopped. I've done some stuff (system restore,
disconnection, etc. but my computer says a specific .pdr
file is missing. Yet when I look in the folder where the
driver is, the .pdr file is right there. Can anyone help?

Try reinstalling the drivers (you don't mention how this external hard
drive is connected). Alternatively boot to Safe Mode and remove all
entries relating to this drive from the Device Manager, reboot back into
Normal Mode and let Win Me redetect the drive and reinstall the necessary
drivers.

it's connected via USB. Forgive my ignorance but I don't
know how to boot to safe mode.

The 'Official' MS method of starting in Safe Mode is by holding down or
'stabbing at' the Ctrl or the F8 keys, BUT you do need to do this
IMMEDIATELY you power up your PC and keep 'stabbing' at them before the
WinMe splash screen shows. You may even need to keep them pressed throughout
the boot process. You could also try the same using the Shift key.

Another alternative is when your machine is running in Normal Mode. Run
msconfig.exe and on the General tab, select Advanced and check the 'Enable
Startup Menu' box.

Don't forget to uncheck the box when you've finished with it g
