Default passport/NET/HOTMAIL logon problems

I have Win 98, cable modem, two computers on a router,
about 6 weeks ago I was unable to log on to Hotmail, NET,
PASSPORT or WIndows Update on this computer, but I could
on the XP one. I have had no problems with log on for
years, then something went stupid. I am guessing it is a
security tweak somewhere. The language and time are set
OK, I have tried the 'Repair IE' in TOOLS System
Information area, I went thru weeks of online help with
people from India(MS/HOTMAIL HELP) I am at a loss I
cleared the files and cookies, I set the security tabs at
default, it appears that I am runnig IE 6.0.2800 1106IC

Do you use a HOSTS file ?? One of the popularly circulated HOSTS files
has an entry denying access to www.passportimages.com, one of the MSN
sites used in the login process.

In Win98 HOSTS file is located in C:\Windows. It is named HOSTS, with no
filename extension. It is a simple text file that can be edited with any
notepad style editor.

However, if you aren't familiar with a HOSTS file then you are unlikely to
have one.
