Default Bios & Other Devices (Unknown Device)

I formatted HD and installed Win98SE. PC is a Dell L600R.
#1-I can't update bios or I don't know how. In trying to update it
says (in the dos win.)
something about memory manager.

#2-In device manager it has yellow? Other Devices. click the plus and
has Unknown Device.
How can I find out what this is or remove it completely.
Everything seems to work.

Thanks

Have you gone to the Dell website and downloaded all available Windows
98 SE updates for your specific Dell model. A search of the Dell
website indicates that your Dimension model is indexed as L___r.
There are a large number of Windows 98 updates listed.

If the updated drivers do not clear up the entries in Device Manager
then select the device entry and then click on Remove.

Reboot the computer and hopefully the device will redetected and
configured properly.

Good luck

Normally you don't update the BIOS and there is no requirement to do so when
installing W98.

Did your Dell come with a Resource CD or perhaps a driver CD? If so, the
drivers will be on the CD

And? Did you try to remove it, as Martell said? Perhaps hold F5 or CTRL
as you boot to get to Safe Mode, & remove the unknown device in Device
Manager. Reboot to Normal Mode. Is all well? If not...

What tells you BIOS wants an update?
What are you running to try to update it?
What is the exact memory manager error message?

"START button, Run, SysEdit", & post your Config.sys & Autoexec.bat
files.
