Default Spybot S+D caused Windows Me not to start any more

Hallo,
kann ich hier auch auf Deutsch schreiben? Wenn nicht, dann eben mit
gebrochenem Englisch.

After using Spybot S+D on my Windows Me System in order to find any spyware
which it did not find, this monster of a program asked whether it could
eliminate some minor irregularities with the beginning of the next start of
Windows Me. When I allowed Spybot S+D to do this, my Me System refused to
start any more because of a "Schutzverletzung". I do not know the English
equivalent to this German word. I had to re-install the whole system from my
_setup.exe file in my Windows/Options/Cabs folder which exists since it was
installed there by the manufacturer which was in 2001. I cannot use my
recovery CD because I changed my mainboards several times already. Now
re-installing my system is no longer possible in the same quality as before.
It now runs only in a way that is similar to the Protected Mode, that means
the graphics display is with only 16 colo(u)rs, I can no longer use the lan
connection, the sound chip on the mainboard which I use (ALiveDual-eSATA2)
is not recognized. I am now really fed up with Spybot Search and Destroy
because the only thing it destroys is your system!

Greetings from Germany

Schutzverletzung= "General Protection Fault" - GPF for short
Which version of Spybot were you using? - I suspect that more recent
versions are not fully compatible with ME at the boot level (It used to be
one of the highest-rated spyware-killers for ME, but that was 5-6 years
ago!)
You need to update your drivers for hardware - especially the Display
Adaptor.
Get hold of AIDA32 (Google it) and run it to find out what your hardware is.
Go to Device Manager, and check for items that are flagged with Yellow or
Red - and go to the manufacturer's websites and download the drivers

If you have problems, feel free to email me direct - my email here is valid

You are absolutely right. Spybot has become more and more ineffective and
bloated up. The version I was using was a more recent one, which did install
on the Windows Me Platform. After having re-installed it, I immediately
uninstalled it. However, most of my programs no longer appear in Software
folder of the control panel, but quite a few of them still function. That
means the Registry after re-installing Windows Me the first time after the
general protection fault was no longer the same as before.
You need to update your drivers for hardware - especially the Display
Adaptor.

I fear that this is not possible with the mainboard I am using presently
(it's the third one), because the manufacturer of this mainboard only offer
drivers for XP and Vista. But I still have the first mainboard Windows Me
was delivered with (which does not function any more) and the second one
which comes from the same manufacturer as the third one, but which delivers
drivers for Lan, Sound, which are compatible with Windows Me. So the only
thing I can try is to remove the actual mainboard and replace it by the
second one.

Get hold of AIDA32 (Google it) and run it to find out what your hardware
is.

I am using Everest and SIW which are installed on the other hard disk which
has XP as a operating system. Furthermore I know what hardware I'm using
because I bought it to my own gusto and installed it all by myself. But I
think the driver for the graphics card (Nvidia Geforce2 MX/MX 400 was
already installed in the Windows Me system when I bought an OEM Computer
with Windows Me in 2001. The CD containing the utilities for the system of
2001 delivers drivers for this graphics adapter, but they cannot be
installed now although I installed Direct X 9,0 c after installing the
Windows Me system.
Go to Device Manager, and check for items that are flagged with Yellow or
Red - and go to the manufacturer's websites and download the drivers
I have not yet tried to find proper software on the site of the
manufacturer of the mainboard. I fear that they don't have any for Windows
Me. The only thing that may function is to try to find standard drivers.
However, with standard drivers the system is no longer as comfortable as
before but I can still keep my applications/programs that are running only
on a 16 bit platform like Windows 98 or a 16/32 bit platform like Windows
Me.
If you have problems, feel free to email me direct - my email here is
valid

Thank you. I know that you have done this job already many years because I
have known your name for several years now.

Whoah!!!!
There's no need to uninstall any hardware - what exact hardware is
installed???
If you had drivers once, then they can be found now!!!
Specifically, what is the make/model and revision number of the mainboard?
is the Graphics adapter a separate unit, or built onto the mainboard? - if
separate, what is the make/model (use AIDA32)
The MX400 drivers for ME are easily available from the nVidia site, or
elsewhere - I'd have to check. (they may not give the 'full functionality '
of the manufacturer's drivers, but I'll lay odds that you'd never know the
difference!).
