Default Slow internet connection

My w98 system has a 100Mb/s nic which when connected to a Wxp system runs at
80+ Mb/s.
When connected to the internet it runs at 4+ Mb/s, the xp system runs at
16+ Mb/s.
Swapping cables and router sockets brings no change.

How can i increase the speed of the w98 system?

The older OSes sometimes benefit from "tuning", because
they didn't have proper provision for delay-bandwidth product.

http://www.psc.edu/index.php/networking/641-tcp-tune

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578

There are a few more web pages like that, with tuneup info.

*******

You should also draw us a small diagram, showing the setup.
Something like this.

Motorola_Cable_Modem --- DLink router -------- Win98 RealTek 8139 NIC
Model 1234 100BT Model 5678 -------- WinXP Marvell 88E8056 NIC

Knowing the details, may eliminate a few possibilities. For
example, some NICs are known to not work well. A few NICs,
they don't use a ring buffer, and have static buffering, and
such NICs are referred to as "low performance" type.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Realtek

"one device driver file goes as far as calling the
8139 Fast Ethernet card "probably the worst PCI ethernet
controller ever made", noting that "the RealTek 8139 PCI NIC
redefines the meaning of 'low end.'
"

It's nice if you can throw in a few details, to spice up the post.

I expect all you really need, is one of those tuneup tools.

Thanks Paul
It was the RWin setting .
I used DRTCP to change that to greatly increase the download speed

RWIN = 8760 = ~3.8Mb/s
RWIN = 17520 = ~ 5.8Mb/s
RWIN = 32767 = ~ 8.5Mb/s
RWIN = 65535 = ~ 11.5Mb/s

That'll do for me.

Tom
