This is the statement from the Avast website copied and pasted "Note: The
operating systems Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 will be supported until the end of
2009. " Hopefully they mean to rescind it.

Hello Harry:

Where did you get this information? (I'm not saying that you're wrong,
just that I'd like to see it also.)

I contacted Avast Support directly via email and they assured me that it
will Not be discontinued for neither Windows Vista nor ME and information to
the contrary is false.
Let me know if you need to see their answer, I will have to copy and paste
it for you.

Harry.

I couldn't find any info or the thread in the vista.geberal group.

Thanks,
Jerry

In the vista.general group I was told otherwise that it will be continued
and referring to the Avast website, which I didn't check out myself yet.

I couldn't find nothing either and Avast will also NOT be discontinued.
Got it 'right from the horses mouth'.

Harry.

Why? Windows ME went EOL a while back; no further development. How hard
should a software vendor work at keeping his product backwards compatible?

Here's their answer to my inquiry for Jerry's information as well:

Dear Harry,

Home version will not be terminated even with avast! 5, there would be
version for free home use and for commercial use. It's false information.

That e-mail confirms the continued availability of Avast! Home (the free
version) when Avast! 5 is launched. The e-mail does not address nor mention
the continued availability of a version that can run on Win 9x systems such
as Win Me.

Here's the question I posed, Mike:

Hello Support:

The question came up whether the Free Home Edition of Avast is going to be
terminated by year's end for Windows ME or Vista.
I am running the program in both systems.
Will you be so kind and clarify the situation?
Most gratefully,

Harry.

Harry,

Surprising as it may appear I can actually read.

Your question was not answered. The reply was for a different question,
namely "Is Free Home Edition of Avast going to be terminated by year's end".

A. It is not.

Q. Is Win Me support to continue beyond 2009. Not answered.

In all probability you are correct, time will tell.
I will send them another email to verify. H.

You were correct, Mike, I apologize for the confusion.
Here is their response:

Hi Harry,

Unfortunately, yes we will stop to support Windows ME and 98 at the end of
the year.

Probably a lot of wishful thinking involved, who knows.
Promise to be more 'faithful' the next time, if I may. H.
