Default USB 2.0 - addendum

That's what I understood but thanks again for taking the time to clarify.

NB - perhaps I should clarify that the original single USB 1.1 port still
only works at USB 1.1 speeds. It is the PCMCIA card which run at USB 2.0
speeds.

Sorry about the 'direction' - though you were US not Cdn.

However, instead of clogging PCMCIA slots (assume you've only got one
anyway) with an extra card, what about e.g. :-
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=172369
using one of the (new) four USB sockets, if you must go LAN/ethernet.

Yes Mart, cable internet via a PCMCIA connection.

I think you went the wrong way in the conversion. 9 Pounds would equate to
$20 Cdn but still worth checking out.

Thanks

DD, you say your PC is a laptop - with PCMCIA?

4 port USB 2.0 - PCMCIA card - e.g. UK outlet :-
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...roductID=47728
Cheap (GBP 9.27 or about $5) and simple solution. Comes with drivers
(98/2000/ME/XP) Works at full USB 2.0 speeds.

Then add a USB WiFi stick e.g :-
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/produ...oductID=534352
and you're back in the 21st Century.

I'm sure you can find US equivalents. My old Toshiba Tecra 8000 (circa
1997/8) with inbuilt single USB 1.1 port, designed for Win98 but now with
WinMe installed, works a treat with the extra 4 USB 2.0 ports at USB 2.0
speeds

Hope that also answers Shane's point elsewhere on the thread.

I thought it might just involve a driver download, but alas, nothing is
so simple. In fact, the mobo does not support USB 2.0. So dearly beloved
will have to plug her MP3 player into my Desktop to charge the battery.
I assume we can purchase a USB 2.0 Controller via a pcmia slot, although
I'm not sure if I understood that even with that, we will be limited to
USB 1.1 speeds. Haven't looked into it but can probably also purchase a
docking station, which may be the most cost effective option.

Again Gentlemen, thanks for the education, it was greatly appreciated.

Default USB 2.0

That looks interesting Mart. Let's see if I understand it correctly. Instead
of using a PCMCIA card to connect to cable, and another PCMCIA card to
provide USB 2.0, I would use a USB2 to Ethernet Adapter with multi outputs,
one of which would allow an RJ-45 connection for cable, and at least one of
which would provide USB 2.0 connection. All for about $25 Cdn.

If my understanding is correct, that's the route I will follow.

I'm just on my way out but will look into to this upon my return later this
afternoon.

Thanks

Default USB 2.0

Not quite Dan, the USB-Ethernet adapter has only ONE RJ-45 connection (from
your cable modem) [lhs of picture] and the USB plug tail [rhs of picture]
plugs into (one of the four) USB sockets of the (potentially new) PCMCIA
card (or USB 2.0 socket on a PC).

The four 'apparent' slots along the side of the USB-Ethernet adapter are air
vents and not multiple outputs. - Bummer!

It's just a self powered (via USB from PC) Ethernet to USB 2.0 adapter. The
point being that you be able to connect to your ISP and have 3 more USB 2.0
sockets for use simultaneously. Otherwise you'd have to keep swapping the
PCMCIA cards for whenever you wanted Internet or USB 2.0. But it would make
your existing PCMCIA - Ethernet card redundant.

Default USB 2.0

On that 40MB/s HDD, do you have a model number?
I might be interested in trying one since the best I've ever gotten out of
mine is about 20MB/s and more typically around 16MB/s. My best guess is the
limits of the HDD USB interface. The HDD itself is plenty fast to do better.
That is if I pulled it from the box and hooked up as an IDE.
Those claims all over the box it came in just are not true. After much
digging, I found some online ads that capped it around 28MB/s. Still, I have
never achieved that speed even.

When USB2 was out, there were many posts about the speed issue, especially
from those who had already been using firewire and most posted they were
sticking with the firewire because it was much faster. I have no personal
experience. Does anyone know if firewire has such preset sharing of
bandwidth? Or what the real world expectations of firewire 400 or firewire
800 are?

A USB 2.0 port will operate as a USB 2.0 port provided the necessary USB
2.0 drivers are installed. Much of what Norman said has no relevance to
your problem other than that like Norman I admit to being surprised that
your mp3 player requires a USB 2.0 connection to allow it to be charged as
the voltages and current are the same regardless of whether the port is
USB 1, 1.1 or 2.0.

The difference between USB 1.0/1.1 and 2.0 is their speed with USB 1.1
rated at a maximum of 12Mbps and USB 2.0 480Mbps. That 480Mbps is not
really achievable is immaterial but 120Mbps is and that is ten times
faster than the theoretical maximum of USB 1.1. Note that some USB 2.0
Flash drives can hit 30MB/s (about 240Mbps) and some hard drives a little
more (40MB/s) but transfer rates depend on what other activity there is on
the PCI bus as well as the file make up, small files being slower to
transfer than large.

Thanks Mike. Just an additional question because I'm not sure if I
understood Norman's point. If I should go the PCMIA route, will it
perform to USB 2.0 or will it be limited to the USB 1.1 speeds.

Thanks again.
