What does one do to get a computer to shut down automatically when one
chooses to "Shutdown"? The computer was capable of automatic shutdown when
it was running W98SE, but, now, with MinME, the monitor just displays
something like, "It's OK to turn off the computer." A hard drive with WinME
was moved to a newer computer.

No, I did not (and neither did my friend - he merely upgraded from Win98 to
WinME with someone else's help) install WinME at all. The OS (and all other
of his applications) was already on a friend's hard drive when I gave him a
newer (newer than his) computer (which did auto-shut-down). His old computer
( had a neck-snapping 233 MHz CPU and older than year 2000) probably did not
even have automatic shut-down capability, so any files that governed
auto-shut-down remained on the hard drive.

The power source is for the ATX form factor MB, but, I'm totally in the dark
about implementing the instructions you offer. Can you give me a bit more in
details, e.g., where are these instructions typed?

186111 - Windows 95,98and ME Setup Switches
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=186111
I believe "Aldo" is suggesting you re-run setup using the /pj switch so that
the ACPI bios is detected.
Here is a procedure saved from befo

"Boot from a floppy, type setup / p j for the cd rom you are using( ie if
your cd rom is D:, type D:, enter then at D: prompt, type setup / p j ) ,
this will load advance power management, if you don't do this , you may have
conflicts and the computer won't shut down.(thanks hiway star) doS"

and a little more info from another user:

" I swapped a HD from a nonATX-Motherboard + nonATX-Case to a ATX-MB +
ATX-Case.

Did you reinstall Windows? If not, then the hardware configuration doesn't
match the installed version of Windows. You have to reinstall Windows (on
top of itself will do). You may want to rename or delete the following file
after you boot to startup diskette and just before you run Windows setup:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD

This is the critical file that needs to be rebuilt, and can only be rebuilt
during a Windows install.

When I do a shutdown It still displays the message "you may shutdown the
computer" and it waits.
I'm sure the auto-sutdown should work, another HD (with Win98 installed in
an ATX enviroment) proves that.

See? That's the point. The installed version of Windows has to match the
baseline hardware. This determination is made at Windows installation.
Anytime you change motherboard or CPU, and sometimes with other hardware,
it's a good idea to reinstall Windows atop itself.

I suspect its a value somewhere in the registry, does anybody know wich?
Or does anybody know a solution for this, without reïnstalling win98?

Nope. Not in the Registry. As above.

Nothing wrong with reinstall Windows. I think what you are trying to avoid
is deleting your current Windows first. The solution, as mentioned above, is
to install Windows on top of itself.

I could not follow the friends and computers in your case but I hope this
clarifies some of your issues.

Ernie, thanks - you've spotlighted the cause of the problem. WinME was not
installed (or even re-installed). The HD (with WinME) was simply
transplanted form one computer to another. Since I recollect my friend
(owner of the HD which was transplanted into my old computer) once saying
his OS was pirated, it's not likely he has an installation CD. It would seem
we're at a dead end, unless, we somehow obtain a WinME installation CD and
THEN we can invoke pj switch.

This is not to condone or encourage the use of 'pirated software' but it
*may* help you get running again :-

Normally, when installing Me from a MS retail CD, it copies the whole
installation setup folder to windows\options\instal. But with (some?) OEM
CD's, it copies them to windows\options\cabs. Other OEM's don't even bother
at all.

You will need to look for one or other folder which should contain some 150
MB of files (i.e. about 25 .CAB files and including the setup exe.file). If
there, copy the whole folder to a CD and you will then have made an
installation CD.

However, under the circumstances, you should take a look at (and print out)
the "cleanhd.txt" file in the above folder. You can also view the "Windows
Millennium Edition Cleanhd.txt File Contents" at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;271673

Study it carefully and be sure you have a note of the existing product key
code (the 25 digit code that was supplied with the CD) and - if the WinMe CD
was an 'upgrade' version (rather than a 'full version') - some proof of a
'previous version' - e.g. a Win95 or 98 CD (N.B not required for OEM)

BTW - you can find your product key by using Belarc Advisor from
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Also, don't try over-installing WinMe (as alluded elsewhere) as you are very
likely to end up with a 'soup' and therefore in a far worse state than you
already are.

Mart

Yes, without the installation files, either on CD or on the hard drive, you
are sol. As Mart says , an over install can cause more problems anyway
though some preparation can reduce them.

ern.
