Default Windows ME background picture

The WinME background picture is stuck on my desktop. Enabling/disabling
Active Desktop is not releasing it. I can preview in Display Properties and
when I click apply/ok I can see signs that something is happening to the
desktop. But the same display remains. Help!

Also I have noticed while browsing all 5 pages of this groups talks that the
Active Desktop Recovery/Safe Mode page no longer displays when an error
occurs. It used to come on without fail. How do I restore it? Could this
be the reason the background can't change?

Thanks for any and all help.
