In general, to reinstall Win98 you can create a separate folder
(c:\windows\options\cabs is the conventional folder -- but it can be the
other one by your choice) and copy there all the files from WIN98 folder
of CDROM -- only files, with no subfolders, ca.100MB total.

Then boot from the floppy, and run Setup in this folder. That will
reinstall Windows on top if you choose "Install in the existing folder".
All the programs installed before will work then.

If you want to do a clean install of Win98 -- the method is the same,
but after booting from the diskette you have to rename "Program Files"
(in DOS it has a name PROGRA~1) and Windows folders to delete them
later, and choose installation in the new C:\WINDOWS folder after
running Setup. Then you'll have to reinstall all the programs.

Mikhail's excellent reply, be aware (beware) that, as you specify it is a
laptop, some laptop computers use proprietary installation discs and using a generic
Windows disc may prevent the laptop from operating correctly IF a format and clean
install is attempted. There should be no problem if doing an over-install (other
than the usual overinstall problems ;-))

In addition to Mikhail's comments, the setting in the BIOS that you would
look for is Boot Devices and select CDRom as the first device. Then if you
have a bootable copy of a W98 CD (not a retail version--it needs to be an
OEM or restore disk), you can install from the CD.

If the laptop is already bootable, copy or move the existing =
"c:\autoexec.bat"=20
and "c:\config.sys" to a different location, then go to=20
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows 95 version=20
B boot floppy. Start the laptop with the floppy, type the following =
four lines,=20
then shut down, remove the floppy drive, install the CD drive and =
restart. =20
Please note that the CD drive may be assigned drive letter "R:".

copy /y a:\config.sys c:\
copy /y a:\autoexec.bat c:\
copy /y a:\cd?.sys c:\
copy /y a:\mscdex.exe c:\
