MSVCP71.DLL Not Found
I've been struggling with Windows 98 reinstall problems today and the current
nightmare is a prompt stating "A required .DLL file, MSVCP71.DLL was not found". Shortly after this prompt appears the Windows 98 reinstall process stops. What is this file and how do I repair this problem? |

There is no reason for Windows setup to be asking for that file. Apparently you are
doing an over-install, rather than a clean install after a format, and some other program running in the background is looking for the file. You really need to disable all background startup apps prior to doing an over-install, and especially your virus scanner. Why are you doing an over-install in the first place? I find they generally cause more problems than they fix. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "tam999" wrote in message ... It is part of a C++ Runtime Library and is not a standard Win98 file.
You can get it here if you really need it, though I suggest you heed Glen's advice. http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl....shtml?msvcp71 ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer http://dts-l.org/index.html On Sat, 15 Oct 2005 19:37:05 -0700, tam999 wrote: I've been struggling with Windows 98 reinstall problems today and the current nightmare is a prompt stating "A required .DLL file, MSVCP71.DLL was not found". I don't want to reformat and do a clean install (If I can help it!) as I have
things on my C: drive that I'd prefer not to lose. I'm planning to get a new computer soon and I'd like to resurrect my old one for just long enough to rescue some programs & files so I can move them to the new unit. All of my problems began when I installed this year's version of Norton Anti-Virus. I think MSVCP71.DLL is probably involved with it in some way. Is there a way to remove NAV starting from the A: prompt of my Startup Disk? OK. I understand the reluctance. I don't remember the last time I did
a reformat but it wasn't this millennium. Follow the rest of Glen's advice. Personally, I would get rid of Norton, but if you want it, then stop it from running. I wouldn't touch NAV with a barge pole, so I have no idea of the details of how you disable it. Have you looked on the Startup Disk to find references to NAV? ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer http://dts-l.org/index.html On Sat, 15 Oct 2005 23:33:02 -0700, tam999 wrote: I don't want to reformat and do a clean install (If I can help it!) as I have things on my C: drive that I'd prefer not to lose. Yes, all your problems began when you tried to install the latest NAV. There seems
to be a plethora of problems associated with getting that app to play nicely on Win98/98SE. We need to get it out of your startup axis. Can you start in Safe Mode? - Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. OR - Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu. - Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. If you cannot start in Safe Mode, or if you can but you can't get out of Windows setup, we will have to figure out a .reg file you can use from a DOS boot, to get Norton out of startup. This is something that might be better done via email. Let's see what we can accomplish here first. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "tam999" wrote in message ... Glen and Others--
Thank you all again for your interest & help! My computer won't start in Safe Mode. Instead I get text messages saying that Norton Anti-Virus can't start because it needs a missing file. Then the computer goes into Setup. Then I get an error message box saying "MSVCP71.DLL not found". Then the computer shuts off. There's no problem getting the A: prompt from the Start Up disk. tam999 "glee" wrote: Yes, all your problems began when you tried to install the latest NAV. A thought...
I have a second hard drive with 70 GB of free space. Could I install Windows on this "D:" drive and use it to uninstall NAV from my "C:" drive? ????? tam 999 "glee" wrote: Yes, all your problems began when you tried to install the latest NAV. Given you can't get into Windows, you may have to find and place that dll
file where it belongs from DOS then reboot and hope another one doesn't pop up. I looked for Msvcp71.dll file on a Win98SE installation of mine with NSW 2000 and it doesn't show up but does have Msvcp60.dll in the C:\Windows\System folder. I have NSW 2005 (you mentioned you installed this year's NAV) but I'm running XP Pro and this file is in C:\Windows\System32. What version Norton are you running? "tam999" wrote in message ...
