Default AVG Win98 problem

I have the newest version of AVG on Windows98. Since I installed the new
AVG I have had problems. I can't scan disk. It hangs during the scan, the
BSOD comes up & when I try alt, control, delete my computer just shuts off.
I thought I would Add/Remove AVG & install it again, however when I try to
remove it - AVG encounters a error & will not uninstall. Suggestions
appreciated.

Over-install it.

What version of AVG do you have? Disabling any active processes related to
AVG including the taskbar item and the masked resident shield should allow
you to uninstall it without error.

Marsha,

I'd be curious what you did to get it to work. I'm asking because I also
have AVG 7 and 98SE and when I try to scandisk, it keep restarting. I did
ctrl+alt+del and ended all tasks including AVG and then scandisk worked.

Thank you.

John

John, I had to go into AVG & disable everything in the Resident Shield
pertaining to "scan", then disable the AVG icon in the sys tray. It took a
while but scan disc & defrag worked. Next time I am going into ctrl, alt,
delete& try that as you stated.

Make absolutely certain you are physically disconnected from the 'net when
you disable AVG like that.

What problems will this cause? I have DSL and have Ctl/Alt/Del AVG a few
times and have not noticed any problems that I know of. I've done it
because AVG seems to cause Vedio problems when I play some games on my old
PII computer. "Lou"

It's called "Standard Operating Procedure". If you forget to re-enable
your AV before going to some website, or opening an email, you will have
no AV protecting you. If something gets in past your firewall, if it is
a virus installer, you're SOL.

Best practices suggests that physically disconnecting your system from
the internet is best when AV and/or Firewall are disabled. That way,
when you decide to go back online, you have to think about it.

I have dial up, if I am not online, I unplug the phone line, not to mention
slapping a post it in the middle of my monitor telling me to reactivate AVG
before I go online again if I have deactivated it! LOL Thanks for the
advice. Some folks might not know any better.
