Default which memory chips will work on my computer?

I recently bought a secondhand computer that (I was told) only has 64mb
of RAM, and would like to add more.

I've looked at various websites and they say that you have to find out
what motherboard you have in order to know which type of RAM to get. I
don't have a manual for this computer, so can't find this out. I know
it's an Intel motherboard because a sign pops up every time I start the
machine, and I also know the CPU is a Pentium III, and the operating
system Windows 98 (not SE).

The only other info I've got is what I found under 'system tools', and
pasted he

HARDWARE RESOURCES - MEMORY

0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 Communications Port (COM2)
4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 Creative Labs IDE controller
11 NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

So, can anyone advise me on what memory chips to buy?

Thanks in advance.

Bad news, many old computers max out at 64MB ram, open the case and look at
the memory slots, if there are none vacant 64 is probably 'it'

At crucial.com they have a tool that can scan your system and tell you
what kind of memory you need. You may have to put into the tool what
kind of motherboard you are using meaning the manufacturer and the name
of the motherboard.

I am fairly certain that you need 168 pin SDRam. Go to www.crucial.com and
use the System Scanner tool in the left hand pane. It will tell you what
kind of ram you currently have installed and how much ram your mobo can
accommodate.

www.Crucial.com and www.4allmemory.com both have downloadable software that will tell you what
memory to buy.
Also consider getting Belarc Adviser from www.belarc.com. This program will give you a total list
of your computer hardware, by manufacturer and serial number and a total list of software, with key
codes, that you have installed. One nice feature, it tells you how many memory slots you have on
the motherboard and how many are in use without having to open your computer.

Default which memory chips will work on my computer?

here how it works (mostly)

p3 mobo for 800mghz cpu or less maxes out @ 512mb ram
p3 mobo for higher than 800 cpu usually maxes out at 1gb memory

You can probably force the PC to countdown (more than once) the RAM via the
bios setup. It will be listed in KBs, not MBs most likely.

I've looked at various websites and they say that you have to find out
what motherboard you have in order to know which type of RAM to get. I
don't have a manual for this computer, so can't find this out. I know
it's an Intel motherboard because a sign pops up every time I start the

system Windows 98 (not SE).

The bios usually indicates the speed and type of cpu at boot time.

The only other info I've got is what I found under 'system tools', and
pasted he

HARDWARE RESOURCES - MEMORY

0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 Communications Port (COM2)
4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 Creative Labs IDE controller
11 NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

The numbered list above is irq usage by component. Has nothing to do with
RAM question you posed.

So, can anyone advise me on what memory chips to buy?

Unlikely you want to deal with memory chips, rather, Random Access Memory
modules or RAM modules, or RAM. These have groups of memory chips on them.

Easy ways were provided by other respondents for IDing your motherboard and
RAM type. Former ways were pulling the RAM out and using the info printed
on them to ID them for their type. Similar with the motherboard to get make
and model information. FCC number IDing is still another way.
