Default How to get DOS to recognize the CD drive.

I know this is a DOS question, but figure you experts had to start there
and can still remember about it.

In an earlier thread on this P133, I put in a empty hard drive. I see in
the POST(?) data on bootup that the CD drive is recognized in BIOS.

I loaded DOS 6.22, but looked in my books, see no way that DOS 6.22 can
recognize a CD drive.

I put in a W98SE CD, the drive light momentarily goes on, but nothing else.

How to activate the CD drive so I can load W98SE?

Details please.

TIA

if you just want to enable cd-rom support temporarily or just for installing
from a cd..then just use a start-up disk, to create one it's fairly easy.

open your control paneladd/remove programs in there click on the start-up
disk dialog and follow the steps.

after you create the startup disk, reboot with it in your fd drive and make
sure that the boot from floppy is enabled in bios..after that, startup disk
will ask you if you want to enable cd-rom support click yes and
continue..after it loads all necessary drivers, you'll be able to access
your cds normally in dos

if you want to enable cd-rom support in dos all the time, then you must load
something called mscdex into memory at boot..to do that you'll need to
fiddle with few things and note it will considerably increase your boot
time..here's how to do it at this link

Default How to get DOS to recognize the CD drive.

The easiest way is to go to www.bootdisk.com and download a dos boot disk
with CDROM support

Well, if you are starting from scratch with the 98SE then you should
have a floppy disk you can use to start the process for installing 98SE.
BTW, what 98SE cd do you have -- aka -- retail, OEM, upgrade, update, etc.

This is "W98SE for a computer that never had windows before"- a blank
hard drive.

I may have created a problem. When I entered the product key, I made a
mistake, it seemed to freeze when I tried to go back to reenter data, had
to shut down, now I have a partial install.

Since you haven't gotten far yet repartition and format the drive. There's no
sense in reloading over what may already be corrupt.

Put the boot disk back in and boot to DOS with CD support.
At the prompt type and press Enter: fdisk
Press Enter again to accept large disk support.
Select 3 and press Enter to "Delete partition or logical disk".
Select the volume/partition you want to delete and press Enter. You have to
remove any Extended volume first if they were created berfore removing the
Primary volume.

When you finish deleting the partition/s, recreate any new ones.
When finished creating any volume/s, format C:.
At the prompt type and press Enter: format c:\

Yikes, you may have to format and try again but I will let the experts
give their advice.

I may be on the wrong tracke here, but that would be a good trick, as the O/P
stated he put a blank HDD into the machine, and seems to want to install Win98SE
from a CD onto that drive.
